OVERVIEW: The Su-30SM Flanker H is a twin-engine, two-seat, 4.5 generation supermaneuverable multirole fighter developed by Sukhoi for Russia and export clients. Armenia acquired the Su-30SM in 2019 as its first modern air superiority platform, optimized for both air-to-air and limited precision strike roles.

DETAILS: The Su-30SM is based on the Su-30MKI airframe but uses Russian-standard systems and is powered by two AL-31FP thrust-vectoring engines, capable of speeds up to Mach 2.0. It features canards for increased agility and includes 12 hardpoints for weapons such as R-73 and R-77 air-to-air missiles, Kh-31 and Kh-29 missiles, and KAB-500 guided bombs. It is equipped with the N011M Bars PESA radar, OLS-30 IRST, Russian digital RWR, internal ECM, and a helmet-mounted sight system. Armenia received four Su-30SMs in December 2019, configured identically to the Russian standard, but delivered without live munitions. Flanker-H is the NATO reporting name assigned to this variant.

“Su” stands for Sukhoi, and “SM” means “Seriynyi Modernizirovannyi” (Serial Modernized). The Armenian Su-30SMs are based on the Russian multirole configuration, including thrust-vectoring and multirole avionics, but lacked operational missile stocks during initial deployment. The aircraft were primarily used for training and readiness, with limited combat role due to the absence of armed inventory.

TYPE: Multirole supermaneuverable fighter

FUNCTION: The Su-30SM is intended for air superiority, tactical strike, and defense deterrence. For Armenia, it represents a strategic airpower asset, although its effectiveness has been constrained by the lack of integrated munitions.
