OVERVIEW: The Su-30SM2 Flanker H is a twin-engine, two-seat, 4.5 generation multirole fighter developed by Sukhoi for the Russian Aerospace Forces. Entering service in 2022, it is a supermaneuverable upgrade of the Su-30SM with improved radar, engine, and weapons compatibility aligned with Su-35 systems.

DETAILS: The Su-30SM2 retains the Su-30MKI-derived airframe with canards and thrust-vectoring AL-41F-1S engines (same as Su-35), increasing thrust and service life, with a maximum speed exceeding Mach 2.0. It features 12 hardpoints and introduces a new radar system N035 Irbis-E with expanded detection range, improved tracking, and better electronic resistance compared to the previous N011M Bars radar. The aircraft supports advanced weaponry such as the R-77-1, R-74M, Kh-31, Kh-29, and modernized precision-guided bombs including KAB-500S and UPAB-series. Additional systems include digital RWR, internal ECM, OLS-30 IRST, and a new mission computer enabling compatibility with more networked Russian combat platforms. Initial deliveries began in late 2021, with the first Su-30SM2s entering operational service in 2022. Flanker-H is the NATO reporting name for this upgraded Su-30 variant.

“Su” stands for Sukhoi, and “SM2” is the second serial modernization of the Su-30SM platform. The SM2 adds the AL-41F-1S engine, Irbis-E radar, and unified avionics architecture with the Su-35, enhancing commonality, logistics efficiency, and combat performance. It also extends the aircraft’s multirole reach and effectiveness against both airborne and ground targets under modern network-centric warfare conditions.

TYPE: Multirole supermaneuverable fighter

FUNCTION: The Su-30SM2 is used for multirole strike, air superiority, and long-range interdiction. Its supermaneuverability, upgraded radar, and modern avionics make it suitable for high-intensity operations with improved lethality and system integration.
