OVERVIEW: The J-16 Flying Shark is a twin-engine, two-seat, 4.5 generation multirole strike fighter developed by Shenyang Aircraft Corporation for the People’s Liberation Army Air Force (PLAAF). The 2022 configuration incorporates extended-range air-to-air and precision strike capabilities, including integration of PL-17, AKF-88C, and CS/BBC-5 munitions, based on a modified Su-30MKK airframe.

DETAILS: The J-16 retains the basic aerodynamic structure of the Su-30MKK but is rebuilt with indigenous WS-10B engines, composite materials, and a Chinese-made airframe capable of reaching Mach 2.0. It has 12 external hardpoints and is equipped with a domestic AESA radar, IRST system, internal ECM, digital RWR, and a modern glass cockpit with multifunction displays and helmet-mounted sighting. The 2022 version introduces compatibility with the PL-17 very long-range AAM, the AKF-98 air-to-surface missile, and the CS/BBC-5 guided glide bomb, significantly expanding its standoff and engagement envelope. The aircraft maintains the ability to deploy PL-15, PL-10, KD-88, and precision bombs like LS-6.

“J” stands for “Jianjiji” (fighter), and “16” reflects its development beyond the J-11 family. The 2022 version enhances multirole flexibility and increases survivability and reach in contested environments through advanced weapons integration and electronic upgrades.

TYPE: Multirole strike fighter

FUNCTION: The J-16 is used for long-range precision strike, air superiority, and standoff interdiction. The integration of long-range missiles and PGMs makes it a key platform for deep-penetration and anti-access/area-denial operations.
