OVERVIEW: The Su-34NVO Fullback is a twin-engine, two-seat, 4.5 generation prototype strike aircraft developed by Sukhoi as part of the Su-34M modernization program. The 2022 variant served as a Su-34M development platform and introduced integration of UMPK-guided glide bomb kits for enhanced standoff precision strike.

DETAILS: Based on the Su-27IB airframe, the Su-34NVO retains the side-by-side cockpit layout, armored crew compartment, and AL-31F-M1 turbofans reaching Mach 1.8. It features 12 hardpoints and was tested with new-generation reconnaissance and targeting pods including UKR-RT (electronic intelligence), UKR-OE (optical-electronic), and UKR-RL (radar mapping), supporting expanded ISR roles. In 2022, the Su-34NVO was observed employing FAB-250 and FAB-500 bombs fitted with UMPK (Universal Glide Kit), giving precision strike capability at standoff ranges exceeding 40–50 km. The platform retains compatibility with Kh-59MK, Kh-31, KAB-series bombs, and air-to-air missiles such as R-77 and R-73. Fullback is the NATO reporting name for the Su-34.

“Su” denotes Sukhoi, and “34NVO” refers to Novy Vozmozhnosti ("New Capabilities"), the designation for Su-34M prototype aircraft. The 2022 variant validated use of low-cost precision munitions through UMPK and ISR pod integration, directly supporting the serial Su-34M upgrade package.

Type: Fighter-bomber / strike aircraft

FUNCTION: The Su-34NVO was used for advanced systems testing and integration of UMPK kits and ISR pods. It enhanced the Su-34’s capability for high-precision, standoff attacks and battlefield reconnaissance under the Su-34M program.
