OVERVIEW: The Su-34 Fullback is a twin-engine, two-seat, 4.5 generation supersonic strike fighter developed by Sukhoi for the Russian Air Force. It is based on the Su-27IB platform and designed for long-range precision strike, tactical bombing, and interdiction missions in contested airspace.

DETAILS: The Su-34 features a modified Su-27 airframe with a side-by-side cockpit, armored crew compartment, strengthened nose gear, and in-flight refueling probe, powered by AL-31F-M1 turbofan engines capable of speeds up to Mach 1.8. It has 12 hardpoints and integrates the Leninets B-004 radar, Khibiny-M internal ECM, L-150 RWR, and an electro-optical targeting/navigation system. While specific 2027 upgrades are not officially disclosed, the platform continues to employ UMPK glide kits with FAB-250/500/3000 bombs, and retains compatibility with Kh-59, Kh-31, Kh-35, KAB-series bombs, and R-73/R-77 AAMs. No confirmed structural or avionics redesign has been reported for the 2027 production configuration. Fullback is the NATO reporting name for the Su-34.

“Su” designates Sukhoi, and “34” is the strike-focused variant evolved from the Su-27IB program. The aircraft continues in production for the Russian Air Force with incremental updates, primarily in weapons integration and mission software, maintaining its role as Russia’s primary tactical bomber.

Type: Fighter-bomber / strike aircraft

FUNCTION: The Su-34 is used for deep interdiction, precision bombing, and standoff strikes. Its range, payload, and continued adaptation for guided munitions make it suitable for sustained operations in high-threat zones.
