OVERVIEW: The Su-30MKK Flanker G is a twin-engine, two-seat, 4th generation multirole fighter developed by Sukhoi for China’s People’s Liberation Army Air Force (PLAAF). The 2022 configuration reflects upgrades to support Chinese long-range air-to-air missiles, notably including integration of the PL-17 for extended-range aerial engagement.

DETAILS: The Su-30MKK is derived from the Su-27UB airframe, powered by two AL-31F engines and capable of Mach 2.0, designed with 12 hardpoints for air-to-air and air-to-surface missions. While the original aircraft used Russian systems and weapons like the R-77, Kh-31, and Kh-29T, by 2022, PLAAF units had incorporated Chinese missiles such as the PL-12, PL-15, and the very long-range PL-17, designed to engage high-value airborne targets at extended distances. The N001VEP radar and avionics are supplemented by PLAAF-specific fire-control modifications enabling integration of these missiles, including probable data-link and software updates. Other onboard systems include IRST, RWR, basic ECM, and a Chinese helmet-mounted sight. Flanker-G is the NATO reporting name for this Su-30 variant.

“Su” stands for Sukhoi, “MK” is “Modernizirovannyi Kommercheskiy” (Modernized Commercial), and “K” is for Kitayskiy (Chinese). The 2022-standard Su-30MKK incorporates Chinese munitions integration and software enhancements, expanding its engagement envelope with long-range air-to-air capabilities such as the PL-17. While no structural modifications are externally visible, the aircraft’s upgraded software and datalink allow employment of new-generation Chinese BVR missiles across legacy Russian airframes.

TYPE: Multirole strike fighter

FUNCTION: The Su-30MKK is used by the PLAAF for multirole operations with an increasing emphasis on long-range aerial engagement and maritime interdiction. The 2022 variant’s integration of PL-17 extends the aircraft’s reach against AWACS and tanker targets, supporting strategic air dominance.
