OVERVIEW: The Su-34NVO Fullback is a twin-engine, two-seat, 4.5 generation prototype strike aircraft developed by Sukhoi under the Su-34M modernization program. The 2024 version continued testing and operational validation of modular ISR pods and UMPK glide kits for enhanced standoff precision strike capability.

DETAILS: The Su-34NVO is derived from the Su-27IB airframe and retains the armored side-by-side cockpit, AL-31F-M1 turbofan engines (Mach 1.8 max speed), and 12 external hardpoints. The 2024 test platform continued using UKR-series modular mission pods UKR-RT (ELINT), UKR-OE (electro-optical), and UKR-RL (radar) which expand its battlefield surveillance and targeting capabilities. It employed UMPK kits with FAB-250 and FAB-500 bombs, enabling GPS-guided glide bombing from standoff distances exceeding 40 km. It remains compatible with Kh-59MK, Kh-31P, KAB-series PGMs, and R-73 and R-77 air-to-air missiles. Fullback is the NATO reporting name for the Su-34.

“Su” identifies Sukhoi, and “34NVO” (Novy Vozmozhnosti, meaning "New Capabilities") refers to the testbed variant used to validate Su-34M systems. The 2024 version focused on operational trials and expanded use of UMPK-guided munitions with ISR pod support, forming the basis for Su-34M series upgrades.

Type: Fighter-bomber / strike aircraft

FUNCTION: The Su-34NVO is used for advanced systems testing, specifically integration of UMPK-guided bombs and ISR pod packages. Its role supports the transition to the Su-34M configuration for precision, multirole strike, and tactical reconnaissance.
