OVERVIEW: The Tornado GR.1 is a twin-engine, two-seat, variable-geometry wing, interdictor‑strike aircraft designed for low‑level, all‑weather deep penetration missions. In 1991, it was uniquely configured for combat with ALARM anti‑radiation missiles during the Gulf War.

DETAILS: The GR.1 was powered by two Turbo‑Union RB199‑34R Mk 103 turbofans, capable of Mach 2.2, and featured variable‑sweep wings (25°–67°) for both high‑speed and terrain‑masking low‑level flight. It used terrain‑following radar and a laser rangefinder/marked target seeker (LRMTS) for attack accuracy. Standard armament included BL755 cluster bombs, Paveway II laser‑guided bombs (with external designator), JP233 runway‑denial dispensers, and Sidewinder AAMs for self‑defense. For survivability, it carried a Sky Shadow ECM pod and BOZ‑107 chaff/flair dispensers. It was certified to carry the WE.177 tactical nuclear bomb. In 1991, GR.1s were outfitted with ALARM missiles on under‑wing pylons to suppress enemy radars before strike packages deployed.

“GR.1” indicates Ground attack Reconnaissance Mk 1, the original RAF IDS variant. By 1991, ALARM-equipped GR.1s retained the standard airframe and pods while gaining passive radar‑targeting and strike suppression capability. The variant used external pods, retained LRMTS, and carried conventional iron and guided munitions. It did not feature built‑in FLIR, and internal reconnaissance systems remained pod‑based.

TYPE: Interdictor/Strike (IDS) aircraft

FUNCTION: In 1991, the GR.1 performed deep‑strike and battlefield interdiction missions, using terrain‑following at low altitude to evade air defenses. The addition of ALARM missiles enabled simultaneous SEAD (Suppression of Enemy Air Defenses) and strike delivery.
