OVERVIEW: The Tornado F.3 is a twin-engine, two-seat, variable-geometry wing, long-range interceptor developed under the Panavia Tornado ADV program. It entered RAF frontline service in 1989, equipped with BVR radar and air-to-air missile systems optimized for high-endurance air defense.

DETAILS: The F.3 was powered by two RB199‑34R Mk 104 turbofans, capable of speeds up to Mach 2.2, and used variable-sweep wings (25° to 67°) for aerodynamic performance across speed regimes. It was equipped with the AI.24 Foxhunter pulse-Doppler radar, supporting look-down/shoot-down capability and multiple target tracking. The aircraft carried a Mauser BK‑27 27 mm cannon and up to eight air-to-air missiles: four AIM‑9L Sidewinders on wing pylons and four Skyflash medium-range missiles on semi-recessed fuselage stations. Ten hardpoints were available in total, although carriage was air-to-air focused. The F.3 was deployed by RAF squadrons including No. 5, 11, 23, and 29, replacing the earlier F.2 with improved avionics, engine reliability, and full radar functionality.

The “F.3” designation marked the full operational version of the Tornado ADV series with standard Foxhunter radar and upgraded Mk 104 engines. Compared to the F.2, the F.3 featured extended fuselage (longer radome), removal of the port cannon, fully operational radar modes, and improved air-to-air missile capacity with four Sidewinder rails instead of two. The internal ECM and RWR systems were similar to those used on the F.2, and no variant-specific upgrades in electronic warfare systems were applied in the initial configuration. The aircraft’s role remained focused solely on long-range interception.

TYPE: Air defense interceptor

FUNCTION: The Tornado F.3 provided the RAF with a high-speed interceptor capable of defending UK and NATO airspace against long-range bombers and strike aircraft. Its radar, missile suite, and endurance allowed it to conduct sustained patrol and engagement missions in all-weather conditions.
