OVERVIEW: The Tornado F.3 is a twin-engine, two-seat, variable-geometry wing, interceptor from the Panavia ADV family. By 2002, it remained in RAF service as the principal air-defence fighter, upgraded under CSP and beginning to carry AIM‑132 ASRAAM.

DETAILS: The 2002 Tornado F.3 was powered by twin RB199‑34R Mk 104 turbofans and featured variable-sweep wings (25°–67°), enabling speeds up to Mach 2.2. It used the AI.24 Foxhunter radar (Stage 2G) with enhanced multi-target tracking and look-down capability. Armament included a Mauser BK‑27 27 mm internal cannon, four AIM‑132 ASRAAM short‑range missiles on wing pylons, and four Skyflash medium‑range missiles on semi-recessed fuselage stations. A ten‑hardpoint configuration allowed drop tanks when not weapon‑loaded. CSP upgrades enhanced radar software, mission computers, and cockpit displays to support ASRAAM integration, though full AMRAAM capability would follow later.

The “F.3” designation denotes the full-production interceptor variant. The 2002 configuration retained all swing-wing hardware and prior ECM/RWR systems, with no structural changes. CPS updates focused on avionics upgrades to support ASRAAM; full AMRAAM integration remained pending until the mid‑2000s. Initial ASRAAM operational capability was achieved mid‑2002.

TYPE: Air defense interceptor

FUNCTION: The Tornado F.3 provided Quick Reaction Alert and long‑range air policing using Foxhunter radar, Skyflash, and newly integrated ASRAAM missiles. The addition of infrared-guided ASRAAM enhanced short-range dogfight capability while retaining long-range intercept effectiveness.

NOTE:
