OVERVIEW: The Panavia Tornado ECR is a twin-seat, twin-engine, variable-geometry wing, Electronic Combat/Reconnaissance aircraft designed for SEAD (Suppression of Enemy Air Defenses) missions. It combines passive emitter detection with anti-radiation missile capability and defensive jamming to locate and suppress radar threats.

DETAILS: The Tornado ECR was co-developed by Germany and Italy, with Germany introducing it in 1993 as a variant of the IDS. The 2005 Mid-Life Upgrade (MLU), part of the ASSTA programme, added enhanced avionics, modern data‑bus architecture, and upgraded mission software. It retains twin Turbo-Union RB199-103/105 turbofans, achieves Mach 2.2, and carries up to nine external stores (five under-fuselage, four under-wing), including AGM‑88B HARM missiles and AIM‑9L Sidewinders. The internal cannon was removed and replaced by the Emitter Location System (ELS) installed in gun bays and wing roots. SEAD-specific sensors include FLIR and a Radar Warning Receiver (ERWE II). The 2005 MLU further improved HRM targeting, navigation, communications, cockpit displays, and mission planning.

The "ECR" designation stands for Electronic Combat/Reconnaissance. German Tornado ECRs use the ELS for emitter detection and have the Cerberus IV DECM system for defensive jamming. Cerberus IV replaced the earlier Cerberus III during upgrades to enhance self-protection.

TYPE: Electronic warfare and SEAD aircraft

FUNCTION: The Tornado ECR performs deep SEAD missions, using passive detection and anti-radiation strikes to dismantle enemy radar coverage and enable safe passage for allied strike aircraft. Its refined avionics and digital interoperability enhance mission effectiveness within networked NATO operations.
