OVERVIEW: The Tornado EF.3 is a twin-engine, two-seat, supersonic long-range air defense fighter developed from the Tornado F.3 for Royal Air Force service. It was configured specifically for the interception and engagement of hostile aircraft in the beyond-visual-range and medium-altitude threat environments.

DETAILS: The EF.3 designation was used internally by the RAF to denote Tornado F.3 airframes upgraded to carry the AIM-120 AMRAAM in place of the previously used Skyflash missile. These aircraft retained the F.3’s variable-sweep wing, long-range radar-guided missile capability, and two-seat cockpit optimized for high-speed interception. Powered by two Turbo-Union RB199-34R Mk104 afterburning turbofan engines, it reached speeds exceeding Mach 2.2 with a combat radius of over 1,450 km. It carried up to 8 air-to-air missiles across 5 hardpoints, including AIM-9L Sidewinder and AIM-120B AMRAAM. It was also equipped with Foxhunter radar and an internal 27 mm Mauser BK-27 cannon. The aircraft was designed for long-endurance patrols over the UK Air Defence Region and high-value asset protection.

The “EF.3” label was an internal service designation applied to modified Tornado F.3s configured for AMRAAM integration and was not a separately produced variant. These aircraft introduced digital bus updates and mid-life capability upgrades to support modern NATO-standard beyond-visual-range engagement capability. The EF.3 configuration did not alter airframe characteristics but focused on electronic, radar, and missile integration enhancements.

TYPE: Air defense interceptor with secondary SEAD capability

FUNCTION: The Tornado EF.3 was used for long-range interception and air defense, particularly against medium- to high-altitude bomber and strike threats. Its radar and missile configuration enabled early engagement beyond visual range, aligned with NATO integrated air defense requirements.
