OVERVIEW: The Tornado GR.1B is a twin-engine, two-seat, variable-geometry wing, maritime strike and interdictor aircraft developed by Panavia. In 1995, it served with RAF Lossiemouth squadrons, replacing the Buccaneer in anti-shipping roles with Sea Eagle missile capability.

DETAILS: The GR.1B retained twin RB199‑34R Mk 103 or Mk 101 turbofan engines and variable-sweep wings (25°–67°), enabling Mach 2.2 speed and terrain-masked low-level flight. It incorporated terrain-following radar and LRMTS for navigation and targeting, standard in GR-series aircraft. The aircraft featured two internally mounted Mauser BK‑27 cannons and eight external hardpoints four under-wing, three under-fuselage, and one centerline. Primary armament included two BAe Sea Eagle anti-ship missiles for maritime strike, plus capability to carry ALARM anti-radiation missiles, BL755 cluster bombs, Paveway II LGBs, JP233 runway-denial dispensers, and Sidewinder AAMs. Defensive systems comprised Sky Shadow ECM pod, BOZ‑107 chaff/flare dispensers, and internal radar-warning receiver. The GR.1B maintained full strike flexibility with both sea and land-target weapons.

The “GR.1B” designation signifies Ground attack Reconnaissance Mk 1B, where “B” denotes the maritime strike role with Sea Eagle integration. Twenty-six GR.1 airframes were modified between 1991 and 1994 and became operational in 1995 with No 12 and No 617 Squadrons at RAF Lossiemouth. Sea Eagle targeting initially relied on missile seeker only; later updates allowed pre-launch target data feed. Unlike GR.4, the GR.1B lacked FLIR, GPS, or advanced datalinks, but retained full variable-geometry wing characteristics and conventional GR.1 avionics.

TYPE: Maritime strike aircraft

FUNCTION: In 1995, the Tornado GR.1B performed maritime strike roles, engaging naval targets with Sea Eagle missiles, while retaining strike flexibility against land targets. Its variable-geometry wings and all-weather systems provided survivable, low-level, anti-shipping capability in the North Sea and GIUK gap.

NOTE:
IOC: Sea Eagle integration completed 1994; operational with GR.1B from 1995
