OVERVIEW: The Tornado F.3 is a twin-engine, two-seat, variable-geometry wing, long-range interceptor developed by the Panavia consortium. In 1991, RAF F.3s deployed to the Gulf War received Stage 1+ (“Gulf War Mod”) upgrades, including enhanced radar, engines, ECM/defensive systems, and hardpoint modifications for combat readiness.

DETAILS:
During the lead-up to the 1991 Gulf War (Operation Granby), approximately 18 Tornado F.3 aircraft were rapidly deployed to Saudi Arabia. These aircraft featured Foxhunter radar upgraded to Stage 1+, improved engine settings (hotter turbine blade temperatures), and structural modifications such as hot-weather tires and modified canopy ventilation systems. Countermeasure upgrades included AN/ALE-40 flare dispensers from the Phantom and Phimat chaff pods mounted under the wings. The standard loadout included four AIM‑9M Sidewinders and four Skyflash medium-range missiles. These modifications aimed to enhance survivability and interception capability in a desert environment.

“Tornado F.3 Stage 1+” (Gulf War Mod) reflects urgent operational upgrades in 1991, including improved radar cooling/software, engine hot-weather tuning, and enhanced ECM/dispensers. Engines were reprogrammed for increased turbine blade temperature (+24 °C or more), improving thrust at the expense of reduced time-on-wing. Wing & canopy modifications provided improved desert operation readiness, but the aircraft retained variable-sweep wings and primary airframe unchanged. This configuration was used throughout Operation Granby and subsequent air-policing missions until later upgrades and eventual retirement.

TYPE: Air defense interceptor

FUNCTION: The Gulf War modified Tornado F.3s performed Combat Air Patrol (CAP) in support of coalition forces, offering all-weather, long-range air defense over Saudi Arabia and southern Iraq. The improvements enhanced target detection, environmental robustness, and self-protection in a demanding operational theatre.
