OVERVIEW: The Tornado GR.1B is a twin-engine, two-seat, variable-geometry wing, maritime strike aircraft developed for anti-ship missions. Between 1999 and 2000, it served with the RAF in a dedicated maritime role equipped with long-range Sea Eagle missiles.

DETAILS: The GR.1B retained two RB199‑34R Mk 103 turbofan engines and variable-geometry wings with sweep angles ranging from 25° to 67°, allowing high subsonic to supersonic flight up to Mach 2.2. It was equipped with terrain-following radar and an LRMTS for low-altitude navigation and target identification. Its primary maritime strike armament was the BAe Sea Eagle anti-ship missile, typically carried in pairs on wing pylons. The aircraft also supported BL755 cluster bombs, Paveway II laser-guided bombs, JP233 runway denial dispensers, and AIM‑9L Sidewinder missiles for self-defense. Defensive systems included the Sky Shadow DECM pod, BOZ‑107 countermeasures dispenser, and an internal radar warning receiver, with ordnance distributed across eight hardpoints.

“GR.1B” designates the Sea Eagle-capable variant of the GR.1; the “B” signifies the maritime strike modification. A total of 26 aircraft were modified between 1993 and 1994 and entered operational service in 1995 with RAF Lossiemouth-based squadrons. By 1999–2000, these aircraft continued in frontline service with No 12 and No 617 Squadrons. The GR.1B did not include GPS or FLIR upgrades, which would appear later in the GR.4, and it relied on the missile's own seeker or pre-programmed targeting data for over-the-horizon engagement.

TYPE: Maritime strike aircraft

FUNCTION: In 1999–2000, the GR.1B was employed in maritime interdiction, capable of delivering long-range precision strikes against naval targets. It combined low-level penetration capability with stand-off missile engagement suitable for NATO maritime operations.
