OVERVIEW: The Tornado EA‑200D is a twin-engine, two-seat, variable-geometry wing, SEAD (Suppression of Enemy Air Defenses) platform developed by Panavia. In 2012, it received Italy’s MLU RET8 upgrade, enhancing its electronic warfare and precision-strike capabilities.

DETAILS: The EA‑200D is the Italian RET8‑standard Tornado ECR, derived from the A‑200 IDS and upgraded from the EA‑200B baseline under MLU RET8 from 2008 to 2013, with operational certification achieved in 2012. Powered by twin RB199‑34R Mk 105 turbofans, it reaches Mach 2.2 and carries eight external hardpoints (four under-wing, four under-fuselage) supporting up to four AGM‑88 HARM/AARGM anti-radiation missiles and AIM‑9 Sidewinders. The internal Mauser BK‑27 cannon was removed to install the Emitter Locator System (ELS) in wing roots and gun bays. It retains Cerberus DECM pod and BOZ‑101 chaff/flare dispensers; the Rafael RecceLite II pod became standard for ISR roles alongside optional targeting pods. MLU RET8 added IN‑GPS navigation with Multi‑Mode Receiver, Link 16, MIL‑STD‑1553B databus, NVG‑compatible MFDs, and integration for JDAM and Storm Shadow/Gbu‑54 .

The “EA‑200D” designation reflects the RET8 MLU‑upgraded ECR model. It features software and hardware enabling deployment of AGM‑88E AARGM. RecceLite II pod enables day/night ISR; FLIR remains pod-mounted only. Defensive/respond functions include Cerberus DECM and ELS combined with updated avionics and datalink connectivity.

TYPE: Electronic warfare and SEAD aircraft

FUNCTION: The EA‑200D is employed to detect, geolocate, and disable enemy radar emitters using HARM/AARGM while defending itself with DECM and EW. Its networked avionics and PGM compatibility enable effective SEAD/DEAD and ISR support in joint operations.
