OVERVIEW: The Panavia Tornado ECR is a twin-seat, twin-engine, variable-geometry wing, electronic combat and reconnaissance aircraft developed for SEAD (Suppression of Enemy Air Defenses) missions. The 2013 Mid-Life Upgrade (MLU) under the ASSTA 3.1 program introduced new avionics, software enhancements, and defensive systems for improved survivability and interoperability.

DETAILS: The Tornado ECR was introduced into Luftwaffe service in 1993 as a variant of the IDS focused on electronic warfare. The ASSTA 3.1 upgrade reached operational service in 2013, modernizing the aircraft with Link 16 MIDS, MIL-STD-1553B digital databus, GPS/INS integration, and NVG-compatible multi-function cockpit displays. It is powered by two RB199-34R Mk 105 turbofans, enabling speeds up to Mach 2.2 and supports nine external stores (four under-wing, five under-fuselage) including up to four AGM-88B HARM missiles and AIM-9L Sidewinder for self-defense. The internal Mauser BK-27 was removed to accommodate the Emitter Locator System (ELS), ERWE II radar warning receiver, and a Honeywell FLIR. The ASSTA 3.1 upgrade improved targeting support for newer HARM variants and added integration of GPS-guided weapons.

The designation “ECR” stands for Electronic Combat/Reconnaissance. Include Cerberus IV DECM pod on an underwing pylon for automated threat jamming. ELS remained the core emitter detection system, integrated with the new avionics for improved SEAD performance. The aircraft also gained compatibility with GBU-54 LJDAM and Storm Shadow under software and interface upgrades delivered through ASSTA 3.1.

TYPE: Electronic warfare and SEAD aircraft

FUNCTION: The Tornado ECR MLU is designed to suppress radar-guided air defenses using passive sensors and anti-radiation missiles while protecting itself with advanced defensive jamming. It provides SEAD capabilities for NATO operations in contested airspace.
