OVERVIEW: The Tornado GR.4 is a twin-engine, two-seat, variable-geometry wing, multirole strike and reconnaissance aircraft upgraded from GR.1 via Mid-Life Update. From 2016 to 2019 it served in Operation Shader with enhanced avionics, Brimstone 2, precision targeting, and modern defensive systems.

DETAILS: From 2016, GR.4s received ASSTA 2/CUSP upgrades, featuring modern cockpit displays with wide-angle color HUD and improved Human Machine Interface. They were fitted with an Upgraded Main Computer and Link‑16/MIDS datalink for real-time operational networking. Defensive enhancements included a digital Missile Approach Warning System, radar-warning receiver, and support for towed decoys and BriteCloud active decoys. In July 2016 the first Brimstone 2 missiles entered RAF GR.4 service, offering improved seeker and extended range. The aircraft retained FLIR, GPS/INS, LRMTS, Litening III targeting pods, and RAPTOR reconnaissance pods from earlier configurations.

The “GR.4” designation indicates the GR.1 platform upgraded under the MLU in 2001. The 2016 upgrade focused on avionics and defensive enhancements without altering the swing-wing airframe. Integration of Link‑16 and Brimstone 2 enhanced networked strike capability. Defensive systems modernization significantly improved survivability in complex threat environments.

TYPE: Interdictor/Strike aircraft with secondary reconnaissance capability
