## 9XX Fateh

**OVERVIEW:** The 9XX Fateh is a domestically produced Iranian diesel-electric submarine designed for coastal defense and anti-surface warfare operations in the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman. Introduced into service in 2022, the Fateh represents a significant step in Iran's indigenous submarine development program, building upon experience gained from the earlier Nahang and the imported Kilo-class submarines.

**DETAILS:**

The Fateh program emerged from a need to supplement Iran’s existing submarine fleet with a locally built design optimized for the shallow and confined waters of the Persian Gulf. Facing international sanctions and limited access to advanced foreign technology, Iranian engineers leveraged existing knowledge and infrastructure to create a relatively small, cost-effective submarine capable of fulfilling critical operational roles. The design emphasizes ease of maintenance and operation, with readily available components and a focus on proven, reliable technologies. While detailed specifications regarding the propulsion system remain closely guarded, it is likely a conventional diesel-electric arrangement optimized for quiet operation in littoral environments. The overall design philosophy prioritized a balance between stealth, offensive capabilities, and operational endurance suitable for the unique demands of the regional environment.

The primary roles of the Fateh are anti-surface warfare (ASuW) and coastal defense. Its torpedo armament allows engagement of surface combatants and merchant vessels, contributing to sea control operations in strategic waterways. While lacking dedicated anti-submarine warfare (ASW) capabilities such as towed arrays or specialized torpedoes, the Fateh's attack sonar provides a degree of situational awareness against subsurface threats. The platform’s smaller size and quiet operation make it ideally suited for covert patrols and surveillance missions along the Iranian coastline and in critical choke points. The Fateh also serves as a valuable training platform for Iranian submariners, improving their operational proficiency and expanding the country's overall submarine warfare capabilities. While not designed for blue-water operations, the Fateh expands Iran's naval presence and deterrent capabilities in its regional area of operations.

The sensor suite of the Fateh provides it with the capability to detect and engage targets in both surface and subsurface environments. The generic surface search radar allows for the detection of surface vessels at a moderate range, enabling the Fateh to identify and track potential targets of interest. The installation of generic active/passive attack sonar facilitates detection, tracking, and engagement of both surface and submerged targets. The addition of optical and low-light television (LLTV) submarine periscopes provides additional situational awareness, allowing the submarine to operate in a visually stealthy manner when required. The generic ESM system permits the submarine to monitor electronic emissions from opposing forces, providing valuable intelligence and early warning of potential threats. These sensors, when combined, allow the Fateh to conduct effective reconnaissance and engage targets within its operational area.
