**OVERVIEW:** The SSG XX *Attack* [Shortfin Barracuda Blk 1A] is a diesel-electric attack submarine (SSG) operated by the Royal Australian Navy. Commissioned in 2030, it represents a significant advancement in Australian submarine capabilities.

**DETAILS:**

The Shortfin Barracuda Blk 1A design emerged from Australia's SEA 1000 Future Submarine program, aiming to replace the Collins-class submarines with a more capable and technologically advanced platform. The design leverages elements from the French Barracuda-class nuclear-powered submarine, adapted for conventional propulsion to meet Australia's specific operational requirements and non-nuclear policy. The resulting Shortfin Barracuda Blk 1A incorporates advanced stealth technologies, a modern combat system, and enhanced endurance compared to its predecessor. The design philosophy emphasizes a modular architecture to facilitate future upgrades and integration of emerging technologies throughout its service life. The *Attack* (SSG XX) is among the initial units to be delivered, incorporating lessons learned from earlier prototypes.

The primary roles of the SSG XX *Attack* are anti-submarine warfare (ASW), anti-surface warfare (ASuW), and intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR). The submarine's advanced sensor suite, centered around the Kariwara COLTAS towed array sonar and the TSM 2253 PVDF flank array, provides exceptional long-range detection and classification capabilities against both conventional and nuclear-powered submarines. The integration of the TSM 2233M Scylla suite, including the DSUV 2H deployable sonar and DUUA 2D diver underwater acoustic aid, enhances shallow-water operations and special forces support. ASuW capabilities are bolstered by the Manta XL radar, allowing for detection and tracking of surface vessels at extended ranges.

The DRUA 33C Calypso III electronic support measures (ESM) system, encompassing the TRS 3100 radar intercept system, provides comprehensive situational awareness by detecting and analyzing radar emissions from potential threats. Furthermore, the TSM 2255 integrated combat management system fuses sensor data to provide a comprehensive tactical picture to the commanding officer. The SATEPS (Satellite Positioning System) ensures accurate navigation and precise targeting, while the SEACLEAR system facilitates secure communications with shore-based command centers and other allied units. The Series 30 SMS Photonics Mast, replacing a traditional periscope, offers improved situational awareness and reduced detectability. The SSDE (Submarine Self-Defense Equipment) coupled with 533mm torpedo tubes allows the submarine to engage enemy submarines and surface combatants effectively.
