**OVERVIEW:** The SS 083 *Dosan Ahn Changho* is a diesel-electric attack submarine (SSK) of the *Dosan Ahn Changho* class, serving with the Republic of Korea Navy (ROKN). Commissioned in 2021, it represents a significant advancement in South Korea's submarine capabilities, incorporating indigenous design and advanced technologies.

**DETAILS:**

The *Dosan Ahn Changho* class marks South Korea's first indigenous submarine design, building upon experience gained from license-producing German Type 209 and Type 214 submarines. The program was initiated in the early 2000s, driven by the ROKN's need for a more capable submarine force to counter regional threats and project power. A key design goal was to integrate a vertical launch system (VLS) for submarine-launched ballistic missiles (SLBMs), providing a strategic deterrent capability. The *Dosan Ahn Changho* incorporates advanced noise reduction technologies and hull design features to improve stealth and reduce acoustic signature. The submarine is named after Dosan Ahn Chang-ho, a Korean independence activist.

The primary roles of the *Dosan Ahn Changho* are anti-submarine warfare (ASW), anti-surface warfare (ASuW), intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR), and strike operations. The submarine’s advanced sensor suite provides a comprehensive picture of the underwater environment, enabling it to effectively track and engage enemy submarines. Its anti-ship missiles and torpedoes enhance its capabilities against surface combatants. The inclusion of the K-VLS enables it to launch Hyunmoo-4-4 SLBMs, providing a credible land-attack capability and enhancing South Korea’s strategic deterrence posture. The submarine's operational profile emphasizes presence in contested waters and projecting power in support of South Korean interests.

The *Dosan Ahn Changho*'s sensor suite allows for advanced situational awareness. The Sphynx radar provides surface search and navigation capabilities. The Pegaso RESM system is used for electronic support measures, detecting and analyzing enemy radar emissions. The Series 30 SMS Photonics Mast enhances situational awareness in littoral environments, providing high-resolution imagery and video. The MOAS (Mine and Obstacle Avoidance System) aids in safe navigation in mine-infested waters. The KSS-3 Hull Sonar, Flank Array, Intercept Array, and Towed Array Sonar System (TASS) provide comprehensive acoustic coverage for detection, tracking, and classification of underwater targets. The TAU-2000 decoy launcher provides a soft-kill defense against torpedoes. The integration of the K-VLS provides a qualitative increase in striking power, allowing for precision strikes against land-based targets.
