**OVERVIEW:** The S 353 *Preveze* [Type 209-1400, *Preveze/Gür* Class] is a diesel-electric attack submarine (SSK) in service with the Turkish Naval Forces. The *Preveze* class represents a significant upgrade over earlier Type 209 variants operated by Turkey, incorporating improved sensors, automation, and stealth characteristics.

**DETAILS:**

The *Preveze* class submarines were ordered in the late 1980s as part of Turkey's naval modernization program aimed at enhancing its undersea warfare capabilities in the Aegean Sea, Eastern Mediterranean, and Black Sea. The design is based on the Type 209-1400, a proven export submarine developed by Howaldtswerke-Deutsche Werft (HDW) of Germany. While retaining the basic hull form and propulsion system of the earlier variants, the *Preveze* class incorporates advanced combat systems and noise reduction measures. These improvements were intended to provide the Turkish Navy with a more capable and survivable platform for conducting a range of missions in complex littoral environments. The *Preveze* class was followed by the improved *Gür* class, which built upon the initial improvements, demonstrating Turkey's ongoing commitment to modernizing its submarine fleet.

The *Preveze* class primary role is anti-submarine warfare (ASW), although it is also capable of anti-surface warfare (ASuW) and intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) missions. The submarine's suite of sensors is designed to provide comprehensive situational awareness in the underwater domain. The FAS 3-1 flank array sonar provides long-range detection and tracking of underwater targets, while the TAS-3 towed array sonar offers enhanced detection capabilities in shallow water and noisy environments. The S 63B attack sonar provides high-resolution imaging for close-range target identification and engagement. The Type 242 Sealion intercept receiver allows the submarine to detect and analyze enemy sonar emissions, providing early warning of potential threats. The CSU 83/1 and IPS CSU 83 integrated sonar suites, complemented by the MAS 83 mine avoidance sonar, enhance navigational safety and obstacle avoidance in confined waters.

The *Preveze*'s operational effectiveness is further enhanced by its integrated combat management system, which fuses data from various sensors to provide a comprehensive tactical picture. The two Generic Submarine Periscopes, one optical and one equipped with a Low Light Television (LLTV) camera, allow for visual observation and target identification on the surface. The submarine is armed with eight 533mm torpedo tubes capable of firing a variety of modern torpedoes for engaging both surface and subsurface targets. The Signal Ejector serves to deploy countermeasures and decoys, further improving the submarine's survivability in contested environments.
