Background:*
Immediately following the German invasion of Russia, Spain raised a division of volunteers
to fight along side of German forces. Many of the Spaniards were veterans of the recently
concluded Spanish Civil War. After training and an arduous journey, the Spanish 250th (Blue)
division took up its post near Novgorod on the Eastern front.**

Captain Escobedo's 2nd Company of the 2nd Battalion, 269th Regiment crossed to the West side
of the Volkhov river and displaced a battalion of the Soviet 848th rifle regiment.
**
That same evening, at 1900 hours, the Soviet 2nd Bn., 848th Regt. attacked the Spanish bridgehead.
A bit later, the 3rd Bn., 848th Regt. joined the attack.
*
*
The remainder of the Spanish battalion is on the East side of the river. The 1st Company is
enroute to reinforce 2d company. They will begin to arrive in a few turns. A battery of the
Blue Division artillery regiment in position to provide fire support. However, artillery
ammunition is in short supply.
*
*
Designers notes:*
May be played with Command Control on or off and all other options at default.
Human should play the Spanish side. Conduct a defense of the bridgehead.*
*
Bring 1st company across the river as possible. They may be able to keep 2nd Company from
being over-run.
**
After the battle:*
The Spanish succeeded in fighting off the Soviet attacks despite the apparent
mismatch. They were assisted somewhat by incompetent Soviet leadership. Coordinated Soviet
attacks were not commonplace in the Fall of 1941.
**

Soon after this battle, the Blue Division attempted to expand this bridgehead. But that
is another story and another scenario. "Arriba Espana".

Thank you.*
