Contrary to many accounts, the US stand at Kasserine Pass in Tunisia was not the one-sided affair often described. In actuality the defenders held their position for nearly two days against ever-increasing attacks before being overrun. German recon units spotted near Kasserine Pass late on 18 February convinced General Fredendall, commanding the US II Corps, that an attack to seize the pass on the 19th was imminent. Colonel Stark was sent to take command of the defense that included elements of the 26th Infantry and 19th Combat Engineer Regiments reinforced by the 33rd Field Artillery and 805th TD Battalions. With orders to "pull a Stonewall Jackson" and hold the pass, Stark had his doubts when on the 19th he found his hasty defense facing a battle-tested kampfgruppe from the Afrika Korps. But despite his concern, repeated attacks by the reinforced PzG Regiment "Afrika" and elements of the 8th Pz Regiment, failed to dislodge the determined Americans.*
