The free-for-all scenarios are fairly straightforward in that it's a roughly even fight between all the races, although some races have better starting positions than others. In extended I think the Keskudons, Lipids and Humans start off pretty well, while the Ylta have an uphill struggle.

The Human Evolution scenario is designed to be more of a problem, and can only be played as the human empire. That is literally true because at the start of the scenario there are no other empires. This was done primarily because if I added races via the game editor, their starting resources would not be sufficient to enable them to get out of their home system. So in my early testing, I found that the AI was easily beaten because they would not be able to expand.

I then had the idea of using an event to trigger formation of the other empires, as this creates them in a much stronger starting position. After having this idea, I decided I liked the idea of using it in conjunction with the 'warp precursors' ruin, so that the other empires begin when you discover this ruin. This means that you can't realistically go to the stars without triggering the creation of the other empires, but you can delay when you trigger them. Note that delaying does not necessarily help you, as independent races can still form empires in the meantime. However, I think it's worth trying to research 'colonization' before triggering the other races. Note that the creation of pirate factions is triggered by an event in a nearby star system. If you don't trigger this event, there will be no pirate factions.

At the beginning of the Human Evolution scenario you will be very short of resources. In fact, you have barely enough caslon to survive. Helium will also run out quickly. Unless you micromanage, you are likely to run into severe resource difficulties. The only source of caslon in the solar system is on Jupiter, and you have to prioritise building a gas mining station as soon as possible. You also have to make sure your private sector builds at least one freighter before you run out of helium, otherwise you will be in real trouble.

Personally, I 'obsolete' all the private designs at the start of the scenario, and I don't allow any private fleet to be built until I have a hyperdrive. As soon as the alien races are triggered, they will start with good planets with a population of 10-12 billion (youll have around 6-7 billion). They will also have Gerax hyperdrive, and several other tech goodies. In other words, theyre ahead of you technologically, and some of them may have colonised half a dozen worlds before you can get one. Of course, this is all good news, as it saves you the trouble of colonising these planets yourself!
