It_is_2:00_a.m._on_July_21,_1861,_a_date_made_famous_in_history_when_Union_Gen._Irwin_McDowell_decided_to_attack_Gen._P.G.T._Beauregard's_army,_protecting_a_string_of_fords_along_the_Bull_Run_creek_using_the_bold_strategy_of_sending_most_of_his_army_on_a_long_flanking_march_around_the_enemy's_left_while_threatening_at_the_center_and_right._This_ultimately_proved_a_disastrous_approach,_though_it_need_not_have_been._But_at_2:00_a.m.,_when_the_first_troops_were_readying_themselves_for_their_long,_circuitous_march,_the_Union_army_was_not_yet_committed_to_this_strategy._Also_no_stranger_to_bold_ideas,_Beauregard_had_toyed_with_the_idea_of_taking_the_fight_to_the_enemy_and_surprising_McDowell_by_going_on_the_attack_instead_of_remaining_behind_the_natural_defensive_line_carved_across_the_land._And_at_2:00_a.m._of_that_fateful_day_this_was_still_possible._This_scenario,_designed_for_PBEM_or_hot-seat_play,_permits_the_greatest_possible_flexibility,_as_either_side_can_attack,_and_attack_anywhere,_moving_under_the_cover_of_darkness_for_the_first_four_hours_(i.e.,_two_nighttime_turns).
