ahhh .... it was the Combat Mode.

I took Saigon weeks ago, but it hasn't begun any repairs - remains 100% damaged port and airfield ... it is fully garrisoned and has adequate supply. What am I missing?

When you bombard, depending on the target location and its infrastructure, sometimes you get "# fires" in the combat result ... what do fires do, practically? Chew up a supply point?

Huh? Why would you stockpile on an island? Stuff doesn't flow off the island. If it's a large island, like Hokkaido, resources and supply will move around, but not off the island. I stockpile fuel at the HI producing bases on Hokkaido to help ...

Is a ground attack by carrier air (or LBA) the best way to soften up the fearsome coastal arty on some islands?

Many of my training squadrons in the US, Canada, and Oz are filled with pilots but don't have enough planes. Do all the pilots in the squadron gain skills as quickly in this situation, or do they each need a plane to gain skill?

So I could put all four fleet carriers early in the war under Halsey or Spruance not not lose any cohesion, theoretically?

No worries Nomad! I'm still trying to pull the thread about the TBs and sorties but I think the answer about drop tanks/hard points may have done it.

I seem to remember from years ago a line of thought that the US fleet command structure earlier in the war wasn't advanced enough for a task group ...

I'm not. They are on naval attack with the expectation that they will hit the ships 4-5 hexes away.

It would really help if you provide some specific examples of units that are behaving the way you describe.
If you are trying to fly medium or heavy bombers on offensive missions from a level 1 airfield, it is quite possible they would never take off. That's only one example.

There are times when my LBA simply refuses to fly - planes around them at their base and others fly, but they simply cannot be convinced to get into the air. Plenty of escort. Meaty targets. No interest, sometimes for weeks at a time.

Anything I can do?

Is there any advantage to disbanding permanent West Coast air groups that can never be transferred to the Pacific? "Permanently lose all planes and pilots" doesn't really sound like a win/win for anyone, but what good are they?

Any tips for trying to find subs lurking outside my ports in the early war? I spot them easily enough with my planes by the abysmal ASW rarely drops on them.
