IMHO the counters are ok; what i'd like to see is the possibility for the player to draw "plan symbols" like phase lines, axis of advance, intel ecc...

Try to set the font size on 100% (i suspect now is set to 125%).

In the meantime, try pressing the zero (numpad) key make icons smaller, maybe it's easy to select the units you want?

Using the Google earth tour, in a /programs/google folder there are the maps in png format; i convert them in greyscale, a bit of brightness and contrast and print in A3 format.

CMBN is superb and in a class of it's own. Having said that, so is PCO. Both games are very enjoyable. And comparing them is completly useless. Every wargamer should support BOTH games.
