RE: OT: Between the Sherman and the Mk 14 torpedo

<r> About that Belton Cooper book - pretty much all tank historians (Honnicutt, Forty, Zaloga) have refuted the claim that it was Patton's personal intervention or even wish that the US Army retain the Sherman; Most of the evidence points to McNair or Ordnance Department which caused the long delay ...

<t> I know I'm no expert, but I'd also chime in advocating against sending KB on a hunting trip "South".<br/>

1. You end up revealing KB being out of position in regards to many theaters in which you and Dan are engaged - this would only allow him an opening (which, given his history, he'll ...

Why is the value on the y-Axis mostly running in the negative? Or is that a graphical representation of the war deficit, i.e. there not being enough wars?

It'll likely end up at Kubinka, one of the unfriendliest museums to visit, if you're not Russian :(

How do unprepped troops fare - generally speaking - in land combat (i.e. when there's no amphibious landing involved)? Or do you mean that you sent unprepped troops to island ...

I second James Stewart. If you are asking for an actor who single-handedly defined the movies he was in and made those movies great, I think that he is my top choice. So many great movies that were simply great because he was the lead actor in them.

Didn't mean to step on toes. Guess it was a poor choice of words on my part - sorry. I just reached for some well-known runners-up for the Presidency, and somehow McGovern is one of the first to come to my mind.

RE: 1/4 is missing but can you ID this one?

I hadn't even thought of the Fourth Fleet-incident, since this looked so much like the effect of a magazine explosion and I was only looking for destroyers damaged in wartime. Someone should have framed this picture and sent it to Halsey before 1944 [:D]

RE: OT: USS Enterprise to be scrapped!

That was to be expected, though. Preserving a nuclear-powered vessel as a museum, especially one that has served as long as this incarnation of the Enterprise, must cost a shed-load of money. Still, that was one fine-looking ship.

I've learned a lot here today. Once you start digging it looks like a surprising number of Japanese destroyers survived losing their bows. Before this thread, I'd only heard of Amatsukaze. Nice thread, fodder.

Hmm, could also be Akishimo, but she was sunk only four days after loosing her bow, at Manila. The picture certainly looks like it was taken in a harbour.

<t> There were several Japanese destroyers that lost their bows, but hardly any survived the experience. I bet this is Amatsukaze (the kanji name on the side plating is hardly legible, but "Amatsukaze" contains 4 characters that seem to fit what is visible here.<br/>
