Re: CMO mentioned at RAeS Future Combat Air & Space Capabilities Summit

I'd legitimately want to see how many times out of a hypothetical 200 quadrillion matchups of MiG-17s against F-22s the Frescos actually score a shootdown.

Kevin Miller's Raven One is the best aircraft carrier novel I've read.

Re: Soviet frigate Storozhevoy might make a unique scenario

Was it an urban legend or real that they seriously considered dropping a nuclear bomb on the frigate?

Making hypothetical nuclear powers

One of my favorite parts of NWS is my ability to give countries that never had nuclear weapons their own arsenals. These range from ones who sought but didn't get the bomb IRL to out-there choices. I'll go into detail on specific cases, but in general...

-Missiles are basically existing ones they ...

The (amazing, BTW) American Secret Projects: Airlifters series talks a lot about stealth tanker concepts.

I always give weapons-capable training aircraft a higher proficiency than the side norm to symbolize experienced instructors being pressed into combat roles.

Trends and Developments in Warsaw Pact Theater Forces, 1985-2000

Great CIA piece from 1985, speculating what a functional USSR and Warsaw Pact in 2000 would have in its army. It would include nine of the newer, more (seemingly) tactically astute "mobile corps" (six in Europe, two in the Far East, and one in the "Southern Theater" by the Middle East).

Very good ...

Source for transport fuel consumption

Found this great resource where, at the end of the document, you see notional fuel consumption for all kinds of transport planes (mostly civilian airliners) based on the distance traveled.

Re: The Battle of Al Khor, 1995 -- new beta for testing

I had the exact opposite experience: My planes launched piecemeal, got crushed, and even though I sunk the enemy Combattante, my two ships also became navigation hazards for future oil tankers. Was wiped out. Still a lot of fun.

Thoughts:
-The enemy Mirages with anti-surface weapons currently ...

Re: A pair of books I'd like to recommend

The Second book presents the flipside of the scenario in the first: This time, the Trinity Test in July 1945 is a fizzle. The bomb does detonate, but fails to cause a proper chain reaction and is a pretty small blast. As a result the Bomb is not available for use for about another 2 weeks.

Re: GBU-31 JDAM (QUICKSINK mod)

I suspect that this program is part of the USN/USAF strategy of putting more ASUW-capable ordinance on more platforms to give the theater/battlegroup commander more options for engaging surface targets, while simultaneously complicating REDFORs targeting and defense problem
