Your calculation should probably also include the chance of certain star types appearing.

And for even more accuracy, the chance that a kind of planet can appear as a moon.

(can't open that perl file right now, so maybe you already took that into account)

I generally do all designs manually. Usually when I research what I want from a tech level. Auto upgrading is useful when learning the game, but it tends to get useless once you understand what components you should be getting for your opted strategy.

Taking over your planet seems like a bug.

Do you mean 5 pirate bases spawned in your system? If so, that's definitely a bug.

Don't disagree with you (pirates are bland and boring), but consider:

1. The pirates you are seeing might be part of your faction's storyline. Pirates don't normally take over planets. If you have storylines enabled, they will always spawn somewhere near you.

Do you have bombardment capable weapons? Defensive facilities are quite resistant to space weapons with small bombardment values. You need dedicated bomb components to take them out. And even then, it might be more time efficient to just straight up invade the place.

You can do two things to aleviate the problem (but doesn't solve the AI issue) :

1. Manually control design of ships (leave ship design automated in the policy level, but toggle the manual/auto design setting in the designs screen for each ship). You can do this on a per ship basis too, so you can ...

Check out my cheat sheet in my signature. I have already extracted most data from the game into excel (also open source formats are provided). The only missing data are from some events here and there, which are very tedious for me to do.

The data set is not yet updated to the latest Mercantile ...

I run manual as well, but resource automation and colony funding automation I feel is fine to leave to the AI. I only take control of a few key colonies. The rest I think is pretty OK to leave to the AI. Particularly since it saves on tediousness and there's too few games to justify going full ...

Best way would be to stack recruitment rate bonuses.

Yes, generals together stack their bonuses.

I think there's a few Shakturi events that relate to specific races. Do you have the event? What race are you playing and what races are near that area of space?

You mentioned using the editor. Did you happen to add a new star system anywhere? I've had a similar issue with freighter behaviour (trying to unload resources at an uncolonized planet and doing extremely wonky pathfinding) when adding a new star system.

There's a text file in the data folder with the other xmls, I think it's called descriptions or something. You can search for the name of traits there, and usually they are accompanied by a description. But not always. And some of them are scattered all over the place.

I'm guessing they are bundled ...
