Re: Request for art and proposed stats for Japanese BB -hypothetical ones

Here is one visualisation of a "what if". Three large twin-gun turrets for the 51cms, much larger central superstructure than Yamato. Otherwise profile the same.

Re: Request for art and proposed stats for Japanese BB -hypothetical ones

Guys and Girls,

Looking at doing a new variant of Empire mod with less CV construction prior to WW2 but weaker treaty so more BB, kind of halfway house to WPO. Now Empire mod is pretty much ironed out, we are finding less and less to improve, I will use Scn 42 to make a new one soon.

I was ...

RE: Rate of fire vs weapon accuracy in determining Accuracy

<t> It's not quite that simple. Accuracy is different for various weapon types (and not relevant to a large number of them).<br/>
<br/>
But let's assume you are talking naval guns.<br/>
<br/>
I have developed my own formula to "fit" values to the values assigned to devices in DBB. For naval guns ...

<t> They did carry the Type 0 Common (or HE) shell. But this was relatively low-filler (4.5% bursting charge) compared to the 2.3% for the Type 91 APC round. This would have resulted in suboptimal fragmentation against soft targets (the casing splinters into fewer, larger, heavier pieces) compared ...

RE: Map faults and changes that need addressing?

I agree. It's a historical war game. Numerous place names changed from 1941 to today. Do we change Rangoon to Yangon? Port Arthur to Lushunkou? Canton to Guangzhou?

RE: What happened to the Zero Bonus in this game?

The B-339-C's had the 1,000 hp G105 Cyclones. The B-339-Ds had the more powerful Cyclone 40s (1200 hp). The B-339-23s (most of which went to Australia) had the G205.

RE: What happened to the Zero Bonus in this game?

The Japanese Type 99 20mm cannon (the Mark 1) was a continuation of the design philosophy behind the Zero - low weight at all costs. This meant low muzzle velocity and a low rate of fire. The heavier IJAAF 20mm Ho-5 cannon was far superior.

<t> Fully agree with you re the Brewsters with export Cyclones. At low altitude a Buffalo I or B-339 stood some sort of chance, at higher altitudes they were slaughtered.<br/>

The real weakness of Japanese aircraft design was the lack of properly powerful engines. They therefore decided to ...

RE: What happened to the Zero Bonus in this game?

<t> Most of it comes down to pilot quality, numerical parity and suitable tactics. The Dutch CW-21s and even the export Curtiss Hawks could perform adequately with Zeroes and Oscars in a dogfight but they faced numerical superiority and were whittled down.<br/>
<br/>
The Zero and Oscar were ...

RE: What happened to the Zero Bonus in this game?

<t> The F4F-3 was very agile and nimble. Slightly faster than the Zero, good climb rate and in the right hands would outturn a Zero. But then they went and packed her full of additional weight (around 500lb extra) for the -4 variant, which dramatically reduced her maneuverability.<br/>

RE: OT: Apparantly Yamato had radar assisted/linked targeting computers

<t> That being said, the Iowas were initially designed in response to the conversion of the Kongos. At the time (around 1938) the US designers only knew that the Japanese were violating the naval treaties, so they invoked the escalator clauses under the treaties. In mid-1938 they expanded the ...

Hiryu took 16 months from being laid down to being launched on the slip at Yokosuka Naval Yard. It then took another 20 months to commission.

RE: OT: Apparantly Yamato had radar assisted/linked targeting computers

<t> Chalk and cheese. The Yamato's FC radar had a wavelength of 10cm and peak power of only 2 kW. That enabled her to possibly range her guns, but not train them with any level of accuracy. To do that, she remained dependent on her optics (which were excellent). The Iowas had a wavelength of only ...

Sure - was just indicating that from a modding point of view maximum sorties appears to be derived from maximum Avgas storage, in case someone wants to mod a new carrier.

RE: USN AEW radars - October 1945

Thanks for clarifying. It seems the max sorties field in the database for carriers correlate closely to a fraction of the actual bulk avgas storage those carriers had in real life, hence my assumption.

Also bear in mind that these detection tests were run in 1947, after they had had some time to iron out teething issues with these AEW sets.
