RE: Pilot replacement drought

<t> Thanks for these quick answers. Yes, Kevin, what I forgot was switching "any" (a shocking affront to my micromanaging instincts) to "from replacement." At last, I can get those rusting stateside airplanes back into the air, after all those months of reassigning their pilots to the front.<br ...

RE: Aerial ASW

<t> And, in my experience, aerial ASW can disclose a submarine's location to nearby ASW task forces, enhancing their chances at hits (I believe) and reducing the submarine's chances of a successful torpedo attack (I hope). If this is all true, aerial ASW efforts do not have to achieve hits ...

Pilot replacement drought

<t> I'm playing a game after over a year off, and am puzzled about why in mid-September 1942 there seem to be far too few pilot replacements available. (Allies vs. Japanese AI)<br/>
<br/>
There are, of course, plenty of numbers shown on the pilot replacement screen, although the last column ...

Thank you, tdpyle. I will take a chance on Windows 8 (as a Mac user who has in the past suffered through several Windows versions, I hate to send any cash Microsoft's way, but . . . Let the games continue).

RE: A couple of questions about unit prep

Is there any benefit to having a construction engineering unit or an aviation support unit prepped for its base? I do this routinely but always have the sense that it does not matter.

RE: OT: Best of luck, Atlantis

I'm sincerely sorry for the folks who are losing their jobs, but I am happy to see NASA throttling back on expenses. Given the state of the US economy, and the dramatic cuts to what I consider more important programs, we can no longer afford space adventures.

RE: TRACOM: to send or not to send?

<t> Parking 81+ pilots in TraCom . . . Doesn't that mean that their own development is stopped, whereas an 81+ pilot in a rear-area on-map squadron can gain sills while being held back for use later in the war? I realize that once a fighter pilot reaches a certain air-to-air rating further training ...

RE: TRACOM: to send or not to send?

I thought that posters in an earlier thread concluded that having 81+pilots in on-map squadrons we use for training did not accelerate training. Do they?

Too bad this sign is not posted for modern presidents, think tanks, and Congress to see every day when they talk confidently about wars and military operations.

RE: Quality vs. Quantity?

<t> My experience with forts is that they can be very useful if manned by actual combat units (especially enemy units [;)], but nearly useless with a mere garrison. I suppose this makes historical sense, as garrisons were often cobbled together from people too old, too young, or too weak to function ...

RE: Quality vs. Quantity?

<t> Muskets? If you play detailed tactical battles (Do it! Immense fun!), you will get plenty of answers to your questions. Here is one example: your nice, plump infantry units with improvised weapons or muskets will get torn apart by a single enemy cavalry unit with longer ranged weapons. Be sure ...

RE: Thinking of Buying!?

<t> The tactical battles are wonderful, remarkably tense and involving, and really requiring your input, your decision to be bold or cautious as the fight evolves. I had no idea how wonderful the tactical battles were when I bought the game. The game allows you to outfit individual units (e.g. a ...

Also, check to see that the sub's routing instructions are not "safer," etc. I have had subs refuse to move until I changed their orders so that they used a direct route (I cannot recall the exact words, but you get the point).

<r> In my current game as allies vs. Japan, the Japanese ASW efforts started getting noticeably more effective starting in March 1943.
