Unknown Soldier a Finnish war film

Post by wodin »

I actually only just finished the book (highly recommended) when I notice the Finnish have just released a war film based on it called Unknown Soldier. It's a long one at 3hrs but blo#dy amazing film with English subs.

Can't recommend it enough.

I think it was someone who posted here that mentioned it was out.

That is already third movie based on the book. First is from 1955 and airs every independence day. And you thought America had it bad with remakes and reboots [8|]
You know what they say, don't you? About how us MechWarriors are the modern knights, how warfare has become civilized now that we have to abide by conventions and rules of war. Don't believe it.

Still it's a fantastic film. Shame Hollywood seems incapable of making something like this.

I've only seen bits of it on Youtube! What I've seen was very good!

You can come over to Finland on 6th of December and watch it on TV. You can also stream it around that time from Areena, though foreign IPs may be blocked. Or you can place an order for a video disc, like DVD or BD

Along with Steiner from Cross of Iron, Rokka has become one of my favourite War novel/film characters.

Can't recommend it enough.

I think it was someone who posted here that mentioned it was out.
I think it is even longer in the TV-series version.

I didn't know there is a TV series [8|]

True for Winter War though: TV series is bit longer than the movie. Both share footage though. Some also dare to call it better than Unknown Soldier. Yet another Finnish war movie to be recommended is Beyond the Front Line.

My mistake. I thought I read somewhere that it would be made into a TV-series as well. I am sorry about that.

I read it too just now: 5 episode long and first aired at end of last year.

There indeed is a 5 part TV series and it is my definite favourite. It has been already released in Europe as a Blu-ray, hopefully the US version comes out soon, too.

Given how complex the book is with the plethora of its protagonists coming and going, I actually prefer the shorter international version of the 2017 movie. A bit like Rokka's War, it is better focused than the longer original version of the movie. It could have focused even more strictly on Cpl Rokka, imho.

That said, the TV seris is "it", imho again. Now there's finally at least a bit more time to give each protagonist more time, and to become familiar with them. So if interested, and it is possible to grab that instead, go for the TV series instead of the movie.

Unbeliavably good. Finland surpassed all my expectation in both war and filmmaking.

The power of the blast from the explosive charge thrown at the bunker was awesome. Really stands out in my mind. Had to watch that scene a few times.

Features here at 1:07 I think? Difficult to say what they did with the explosion itself though.
