Purchasing question

Post by JudgeDredd »

Buying games from you now - is there a difference in the money you get when buying from Steam or direct from yourselves?

The last time that I checked, Steam/Valve, takes a 30% cut of each sale. Whereas when you purchase directly from the vendor's storefront 100% goes to the vendor. Do you think Valve's 30% cut of sales is too high?

Matrix/Slitherine makes it easy to just buy from them and then get the Steam key. Though I don't know if there is any behind the scene cost for that functionality.

In 2014 I remember Steam go for local currencies abandoned $ and Euro in some countries outside US, Western Europe and perhaps Saudi and Qatar. In 2023 they go back before 2014 policies because of very bad economy in Argentina and Turkey. They couldn't analyse what should be best pricing and for how long price should be same.If you earn money in Dollars or Euro I see no point purcasing from Steam outside big discounts. But the cost of giving free Steam keys in Matrix/Slitherine part is interesting question.

Microsoft Xbox takes 30%. Recently they changed their PC games from 30% to 12% because Epic is 12%. Nintendo, Steam and Playstation take 30%. itch.io is a pay what you can for developers as long as it's at least 10%. Between 30% and 50% is fairly typical for game publishers. If you are a developer and you go to a publisher you pay them their rate, 30% to 50%. Then the publisher puts your game on a distribution site like Steam and they take their cut, in this instance 30%. After that the developer pays taxes. If you live in Austrailia it's another 30%.

So after everyone has taken their pound of flesh you are left with about 25% and about 36% depending on publisher/platform arrangements. If you self publish then it's about 50%. But if you self publish and no platform then how do you get the word out? Your earnings will likely suffer. And don't forget the pieces the various government agencies carve off reducing your earnings further. I've always felt for someone to develope software on their own they either really love what they do or they are masochists.

There is already a market for small budget games in mobile market and can earn big profits perhaps if they are not so much masochists. Some companies already invest to it and build an office in countries where AAA games not produced only for mobile gaming industry. Black Myth: Wukong from China did hit the sales in PC. For a gamer I look for quality rather then where it comes from.
