Have a look at Attack Vector: Tactical by Ad Astra games. Very realistic space combat. It's a boardgame though not computer. I think there's a review on the Wargamer

Trust me, this fiction is more realistic than reality!

We at WCS have been considering a sci-fi game in which aliens invade and you have to kill them, but they're just too powerful, and just when you're about to lose they all die from bacterial infections and viruses. Seems like exactly what you're looking for.

Seconded. Excellent game, as is the (marginally) 'lighter' Saganami Island Tactical Simulator, which is much the same game adapted to David Weber's 'Honorverse'. There were plans for an Attack Vector PC game at one point, but sadly they came to nothing.
As to PC games, it isn't 'realistic' but Sword of the Stars is as close as I've found. It is as much a space wargame as it is a '4X'.

Not really. When I'm talking about realism in such games, I mean realism within ramifications of the setting.
For example:
Wh40k wargame still would have deamons and fantastic weapons but wouldn't have base building, hit points, etc. and would have proper command & control, proper unit psychology, proper damage/accuracy model, etc. etc. etc.
Science fantasy is even easier as one can simply throw in stuff from medieval/WWII/other relevant period and make realistic war in a fantasy world.

Yes it would be so bad if Matrix had a huge commercial success.
SciFi and Fantasy sell well, a "Real" war game in that line could bring lots of folks over the line, to Wargaming.
I know FoG is looking at adding a Fantasy Module.
Everyone says how niche Wargames is, perhaps it is because if your not in the club, you get pushed out.

Oh.That's truly sad. I heard good things about that game. I'll consider buying the boardgame if I'll manage to find a gaming partner in vicinity.

I looked it up on YouTube and it's not really my cup of tea. It seems to be pretty anti-realistic.

Sci-fi games sell well usually because a lot of money is invested in making cut-scenes, graphics and special effects. I don't think a medium budget sci-fi wargame would be a huge financial success.

I wonder why the sci-fi/science-fantasy/fantasy game developers insist on making anti-realistic games.
A realistic high-budget Wh40k or Command & Conquer wargame would be an incredible spectacle and playing it would be a great experience.
But no, they have to make slow and boring RTS games with bulletproof people. I guess it simply requires less work.
I doubt any action game player would be able to resist playing a realistic RTW where people explode in a shower of gore when shot by Space Marines.

Sounds like War of the World[:)]. A War of the World wargame set in a correct period would be awesome.

I tought that was funny too. [;)] I would enjoy sci-fi wargaming, I have many pc games with a sci-fi flavor that I enjoy... I won't say they're very realistic, but are fun none the less. A few come immediately to mind..
Starcraft was a fun game, Battle Isle the andosia war is a fun game, X-com UFO defense and Terror from the Deep were fun games, UFO Afterlight-Aftermath-Aftershock were enjoyable, especially with mods, All the Fallout games were fun, MOO 2 was a great game, Warhammer 40k Dawn of war and expansions were a hoot... The list goes on and on.
I can see where a Sci-fi game that takes command and supply into account realisticly would be interresting too.[8D]

You guys need to find an old game called "Star Legion" one of the best old time sci-fi wargames ever made.
Also, if you're into Sci-fi space battles turn based then Renegade Legion Interceptor is the game for you. One of the best tactical turn based space combat games I've played. If you build up enough prestige in a game made craft you can then begin to design your own custom fighter and those things can get huge with powerful turrents and rockets.

Hi!
On the Wargamer forums there are several threads about Aurora, which seems to be an ultracomplicated and ultrarealist 4x sci-fi game. It looks more like Harpoon than Master of Orion. [;)]
Here you can find its forums
http://aurora.pentarch.org/index.php
And here some comments about it on the wargamer

Cheers
