My favorite is definitely Distant Words: Universe. I've put in about 500 hours and the game is still one of my favs. I recently purchased Command: Modern Air/Naval Operations and picked up War in the West today. Since I'm not terribly familiar with the detailed military history and lingo of those eras, I'm currently spending and will continue to be spending more time learning that than actually playing the games.

WitE, WitW and WitP-AE are definitely intimidating. I consider them collector's items that I may one day have the strength and motivation to play.

With the in-game editors, the Distant World series and Command (CMANO) let you jump in and start having fun without getting too serious about the rules. I also found Pandora to be better than CIV BE. Pandora+Expansion+latest beta (1.5.5+) is an AI work in progress that may lead to a really amazing game.

AT Gold is limitless fun and Flash Point Red Storm is amazing.

Twotribes, That's been me with AGEOD games. I have 5 of them, but I've only played them superficiality. I just haven't quite figured out the angle to get deep into the tactics, but I know when I do get there it'll be a blast.

I like the idea of AGEOD games but hate the interface.

My favourite wargames are still the old Talonsoft Battleground series which are sold here in bundles, Napoleonic and Civil War. 'Highway to the Reich' and 'Scourge of War Gettysburg' rate well too.

The only game I am playing at the moment - and very much enjoying despite its known problems - is Matrix World In Flames.

I would echo the comments of others that those monster games (War in the West, -Pacific) are great in theory, but actually getting to the point where you get your money's worth out of them takes some real focus. Generally they just occupy a corner of my desktop taunting me [:)] To End All Wars is definitely not a good starting point, that series is difficult to get a grip on, and that's probably the most complicated of the bunch (I haven't actually played it).

Commander: The Great War would be my pick! Lots of fun and easy to learn, while still offering strategic choices.

I've given myself over to AGEOD games. Lots of games I really like. Too many. But I decided recently to immerse myself in AGEOD. Right now I am playing Civil War II and To End All Wars full campaigns along with video AARs to really get a better understanding of the system. I've played AGEOD off and on for some time, usually the shorter scenarios, but I decided to go the full campaign route with the AARs to really get deeper into them. I like the wego. I also like the space. This is seen best in games like the Alea Jacta Est series, though it also comes into play in CWII and to a lesser extent in TEAW, though even there in the east there is space to maneuver. There is a learning curve, and with the video AARs, I am picking up on new things every turn.

Thanks guys! I really appreciate the input. Keep it coming... I still have not made up my mind. Although I have eliminated War in the Pacific -AE for this purchase. Not sure I would like it being more of an air and naval game. Right now I am leaning to War in West. I like the theater, I like 2by3 games, and I think the scale will be smaller than WITE. I also like that I can get 30 dollars off this weekend. I also found a game called Uncommon Valor from 2002. That is the pre cursor to War in the Pacific. I can try that out before diving into WITP. But I may change my mind.

I'd take a serious look at the two Decisive Campaigns games. They are very good games.

Of the Matrix titles I own, I like and play ATG and Quadriga the most.

I play a ton of Empire Builder Pronto because my wife likes it.

History began July 4th, 1776. Anything before that was a mistake.

There are two games I like most from the Matrix, one is Distant Worlds and the other is War in the Pacific-Admiral Edition. WitP:AE would have been better if they didn't allow (random delay) on pilot transfer and the worst parts is not be able to escort your bombers. So my favorite is Distant Worlds.

Flashpoint Campaigns: Red Storm as the best compromise between pure wargaming goodness and practicality. I do love the 2by3 mega-games, but in all honesty I think giving them the attention they really deserve will have to wait for my retirement [&:]

Don't overlook the excellent 'Take Command' series if you are into ACW (and soon Napoleonics as well). And away from Matrix, Command Ops 2 at the current price is an absolute steal.

+1 Decisive Campaigns. I would always recommend either Blitzkrieg or Case Blue as deep, but streamlined alternatives to the monster games.
