Star Wars Rebellion game at GoG

Picked up Star Wars Rebellion recently on sale at GoG and was very pleasantly surprised by the game. I missed this game back in the 90's when it first came out, had I ever played it back then I suspect it would rank as one of my favorites from that decade.
Lots of gaming goodness with this title, I'd compare it to Emperor of Fading Suns on a fun factor, if you liked that old title you'll probably like Rebellion as well.
Found two lets play series for the title (one for each side), though the guy speeds through things so fast I'd say there is limited value in using them as any kind of learning tool.
Anyway check it out if you're in the mood for some good retro fun, the game runs very well on my Win 7 64 bit system. Only had a single crash in 3 or 4 days of playing it, but that was probably related to me using alt-tab to jump in and out of the game a lot.

Loved this game as a kid. I don't know if I ever won as the Rebels.
I especially liked how important the sabotage and assassinations and other espionage actions were.

Loved this game too. Eventually found I had to play it on hard mode though to give the enemy the ability to research their better ships quicker [8D]

I though it a very fun game that has been on my hard drive since it first came out, early 1998 iirc, it was called star wars supremacy when released in the UK and still plays well today, speedy I agree about upping the difficulty to balance the ai's slower research making it a much harder fight, also really liked the 3 stage conditions for winning it made for a much better game.
It's was until recently still fan modded and supported at

I grabbed on Steam last week. It's always been a favorite. It's fairly deep, bordering on a 4x type game.

I still like it. Although, after a while it get tedious to send spy missions to everyone of your own planets.

Not needed, just post 3 or so troops with really high detection levels on a planet and it goes a long way to reducing all the sabotage. I foil 8-9 out of 10 attempts with just garrison troops and don't bother with defensive spy missions anymore.
While it's annoying to replace the occasional destroyed shield or troop, my guess is the AI is losing far more production value in lost spies due to all the foiled mission announcements I get now.

That is not why I spy on my own planets. By doing so I get advance warning on incoming enemy ships and incoming enemy missions. Nice to know where their important characters will be so you can try to capture them.
Edit: And even more important where to send my own ships and fighters.

This game was a wonderful part of my childhood but things like this are why when you forensically take the game apart you have to admit it really isn't very good.
That, and the optimal strategy for the Empire is to blockade a planet, sabotage all but one enemy troop, then run incite revolt missions till the popularity bar runs over into your favour (critical mechanics mistake: incite revolt runs off leadership which the Empire has shitloads of, rather than Diplomacy which it is bad at). Then take out the last troop holding the planet and it'll flip and the massive popularity wave you get for 'liberating' a planet will flip half the sector to you.
e: also things like being able to go anywhere
from anywhere mean that really there's no critical strategic points on the map to fight over beyond production buildings, and fleets/characters can spend a hundred days or more in hyperspace where they are untouchable.

I guess it all comes down to how you play the game. Just because you can break things using game mechanics with something like what you describe doesn't mean you have to. In your example I would simply invade as the empire would be expected to in Star Wars lore and then try and hold the planet through the ensuing turmoil and counter attacks via alliance espionage efforts.
Conquering through espionage alone I'd leave to the alliance and then only if the planet was already leaning pro-rebellion due to the starting setup or changes via normal game play.
