I finally picked it up with the 30% coupon and the new shipping rates.

I must say I am extremely impressed with the physical books and what little I have delved into the game so far.

I will do more of a review after I have read a lot more in the rules and players handbooks.

The review should be pretty simple:

World In Flames is the finest wargame ever made.

Matrix World In Flames, if it ever gets finished, will be the finest computer wargame ever made. However, there is much work to be done.....

I find the map scrolling makes the game unplayable. I don't know if its just me.
But yesterday tried to do shore support.
1. click on BB - spinning circle thinking
2 - scroll to target hex. - spinning circley thing
3- select hex
4 scroll back spinning thinking circle
5 - repeat.

Took so long I couldn't face having defensive fire support as well. SOOo Slooowww

Every time it's on sale I am so tempted. No AI, no buy - I have to discipline myself to that but I believe it's crucial and I absolutely hate the "AI is always poor so don't waste time on it" attitude (not just for this game btw). If I thought the game would be certain of having AI added at some point I would happily buy it, at almost any price, but it's always a "maybe one day". Consequently, Matrix WiF is stuck at "maybe one day" for me too.

I have not really regretted a single wargame purchase from Matrix Games/Slitherine.

I have regretted I have more control over buying new shoes than new wargames though :)

World in Flames cost me HOW MUCH!!, but, the books are incredible and the software, well it's what it is, hardcore wargaming.

And I have not really played it yet. Oh well, I eventually sold my ASL collection because I wasn't really playing it.

I still buy models, but, at least I build them even if only just that, build but not finish.

I have not gotten around to buying about 5 awesome wargames in the last 2-3 years. Wish I had them, but, the cash wasn't there finally.

I bought Matrix WiF about a year after release as a complete noob. I thought the lack of AI would be a complete game killer. But I found it to be the best East Front experience from the German (ground war) perspective I ever played. Mostly because there are so many phases, you forget what your opponent (i.e., you!) were planning and just play naturally.

I will admit I totally blew off the naval aspect. It simply was too much work and paid too little dividends for it. I will probably never play another 1942 hotseat game, but feel I got a good portion of my $100 worth during two months of play. Surprising.

I want World in Flames because it simulates the naval side of the war along with the traditional fighting. I'm just unsure if its worth the hundred dollar investment considering its been on the back burner for a few years. I just hope development doesn't stop if matrix has a few bad years revenue wise.
