Is deleting a lot of unplayed games a good idea?

Post by jack54 »

Hi again,

I'm tempted to delete from 10 to 30 games that I rarely look at... on the high end it would free up 40 GB of disc space. Current hard drive has 639gb free and 291gb used. Everything is running fine but I hate to see drive space disappear.

Yes.

You could always install them if you get a hankering.

IMHO, I'd leave well enough alone. You have plenty of hard drive space left, and reinstalling games and then patches, and then mods, can be a real hassle.

Now if it was one 40GB game on Steam, and some get a lot bigger than that, then I would certainly delete one game to save that much space. But 10-30 games, may not be worth it.

I probably have close to 100 games and the way I choose which ones stay (though like you I have plenty of space) is if I've played it in the last 6 months it stays. If haven't played it longer than that it goes. Right now I'm down to 3 games installed just because I haven't played much in the past year. There are many I haven't played in several years.
If I get a hankering to play one that's not installed it's easy enough to download it again.

Since I use a relatively small C drive of 560 GB or so, I frequently delete what I'm not playing. Matrix has the serial number for re install in the members area. Steam same thing, the few games that are not like that I have the disks. Never given me any issues.
The worst that happens is I forget the switches to employ for certain games to run nicely in Win 10.

Well, if you delete them and then reinstall them but need the switches, I suggest that you use either a text program to save the switches by copying and pasting them into a text file or even use a spreadsheet to save them.

Remember that you have to be smarter than the average bear to get that picnic basket. [;)]

Remember you can compress a folder on disk via Properties->Advanced. If the assets are already compressed it won't make much of a difference, but if not you could gain a decent amount and still leave the games playable (at a small loading speed cost, although perhaps not if you have a slow disk and quick CPU).

Cheers

40 gig is nothing for a hard drive these days. I just keep everything and if I'm concerned about space I shove in another hard drive. I have a full size tower so I still have two empty bays. Currently four TB in hard drive space not counting a 500gb SSD for system and non game stuff. Plus most of my games these days are on Steam so I can install/uninstall easily. I guess I'm just lazy. With Steam and GoG it is just one click of a button to remove or re-install a game, so I do it all the time. And the savegames are maintained in the cloud even when uninstalling and it allows me to switch playing from the fauteuil on my laptop to my desktop from a solid chair, depending on the state of my back.

So the actual installation is just a minor change in configuration.

Thanks to everyone for the advice... so far I haven’t deleted anything yet. I may boot up a few and see if they’re worth keeping but I decided against a mass deletion.

I think that it is really usefull idea. But if you dont need more space in ssd\hdd, than it is no need. No doubt, im in a real sense need arrangement with drivers. Absolutely, I through and through concur with this subject! I see that it isn't all through conceivable to put down your wagers on the web. Notwithstanding, fortunately I discovered this source at https://newcasinos-au.com/casinos. I picked them for their consistency and speed of reconstructing and withdrawal of compensations. This is the best assistance I've utilized. What's your appraisal on it? I ought to get that.

That depends whether or not the deleting is intentional. If it is, it's an absolutely splendid idea.

It’s like stuff in the house or in your files that you haven’t looked at in 10 years, I tend to get rid of the stuff, you can always reinstall the games unless it would take to long to install them based on internet speed. I am in the same predicament, have 100’s of games but play the same five. It stinks but that’s the way it just works out as we move ahead in years. Either way you’re fine.

I think is reasonable to delete the games that you are not playing anymore. Save the space[&o]!

I have plenty of disk space so I seldom delete games because I never know if or when I may get a craving to play them again. On the other hand, if a game is so bad that I wish I'd never purchased it in the first place, I might delete it just so I won't have to see its name again. [:D]

I have a folder of 65 older, mostly dosboxed games some of which I haven't played in years or never played that I always keep on my pc. They only take up 24 gig and it's easier to keep them installed than have to find and reinstall from cd's or thumb drives when they get mentioned here or on another discussion forum and I want to revisit them. Just this year that's happened with Over the Reich, Achtung! Spitfire, and QQP's WWII Battles of the South Pacific.

With GOG and Steam I only keep games I'm currently playing or where I have a long running campaign going installed and visible in my library.
