Moving my Wife from Pc to Imac.... thoughts?

Post by jack54 »

My wife is due for a new Desktop... she already has an I phone, I-watch, and and I Pad. She adores simplicity and I'm thinking the airdrop capability and I-cloud updating everything on each device is perfect. Her concern is spreadsheet and word possessor type programs. She doesn't like 'numbers' {Apples office type program) but I think she'll get use to it. I don't want to push to0 hard since I'm not that knowledgeable on the subject

She's not a gamer so that's not a limiting factor.

thanks for any help! :D

I think you can get Microsoft Excel and Word on Macs

But why not try Libre Office first? - it is free and works on PCs and Macs. For most people it will be compatible enough.

I am a Windows guy.

I have a Mac Mini because I use it to watch Youtube on my TV.

I have iTunes on my Windows desktop but I also have iTunes on my Mac Mini. I use the Mac Mini to play music when we have a BBQ.

Therefore I have limited knowledge of Apple.

The windows feature of a Mac is different to Microsoft and it is not intuitive. It is klunky. Microsoft does this many times better.

The "file save as" on a Mac also is not intuitive. And it can be hard to find where in fact I saved that file! On a Mac it is difficult to use the filing system. Windows filing system is much better.

iTunes under Windows is easy to use but recently there has been an update to Macs. I have been using iTunes for 8 years. I had to Google how to use iTunes on a Mac. Now I know but it is not intuitive. The change was a dumb change!

If you get a Mac, get a Mac Mini instead of a full size Mac. Get Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Word to run on it. None of the others are worth while.

The Mac will enable your wife to link all her Apple devices in one place so there a benefit there.

If you are interested about wargames working on the MacBook/iMac. You can read my article about it which includes my extended testing of various softwares to run typically compatible windows wargames on my new Macbook.

Hope this helps.

I have run Windows since there was Windows.
I made my money programming Windows.
I have had Windows machines from multiple manufacturers.
I do all my gaming on Windows.
Windows has improved a lot.

The best Windows machine I have is my 27 inch, 5K, iMac running VMWare Fusion. I. switched my personal machines to Apple perhaps 20 years ago. Your wife will love her Mac as much as my wife and I love ours.

I run an iMac 27 inch monitor with 6 CPUs, 40 GBs of RAM and a 1TB SSD. I also run VMWare on it and gave my Windows half of my macs h/w. I am running WITE2/WITW, MWIF, CS ME, CS Vietnam, all the JTS/WDS games (around 70), and some other stuff like WITP-AE, SPWW2, SPMBT and VASSAL with no issues.

If she uses a PC why would you try and train her to use something else? Much trouble for nothing. And if she's like my wife the machine does not need fantastical specs. PC is much less money. For under $400 I got my wife a new Windows laptop that does anything she might do.

Since it is office work, your Wife will probably better off with windows, especially if she is currently using windows and is used to it.

because She 'loves' her I pad, I Phone and Apple watch...anything done on one device is automatically updated to the others. That would also happen with her I mac.

Her concern is office things like spreadsheets and word files.Microsoft Office is available for Imac but not sure about it integrating with the other devices the way Apple 'Numbers' app does. Ultimately it's her decision.

The integration works fine between all three.

I started my iMac a week ago and I already had to call Apple support after a problem with my Apple ID that my iMac no longer recognized as valid. Problem quickly solved but the Apple support does not know where it comes from (following updates in my opinion), it seems that these are things that happen when the computer is new...
