Windows 8 for Matrix Games

Post by mariandavid »

If this is the right place! Have about 30 Matrix games and am staring at either Windows 7 (Obviously OK) or Windows 8 for an update. Any input on issues with 8 and Matrix games?

I am going to be installing (upgrading XP) 8 tonight or tomorrow. I'll post here with my collection results.

Installed tonight. Download was quick enough, I could use the computer during dl and didn't pay attention to the time. Install took about an hour with several restarts required.

I have an old HDD in a $20 USB enclosure that I transferred or copied files to in case things went sour.

I have a second drive with Ubuntu Linux installed and the dual boot menu is still there.

I'll start installing games tomorrow and report back.

Thanks - this is exactly the kind of thing which I (and I suspect many others) want to know.

I got PCO running by installing .Net 1.1 from Microsoft directly.

One program launches but will continually crash to desktop so essentially unplayable on Win8 - Strategic War in Europe.

Combat Command and ........ work fine.

I presume you tested with a mouse.

WIN 8 is touch screen friendly.

Can you play using a touch screen?

Yes...mouse and keyboard. Don't know about the touch screen. I'm not investing in a W8 touch screen anything right now.

For Scourge of War you have to run as Administrator otherwise the menu has no font. Just boxes where the text should be.

I just recently purchased a new ASUS w/Windows 8, Intel CORE i7,8.00 GB, 64 bit (no pen or touch input on display). Loaded WITPAE latest version and it runs too slow to be playable. Screen scrolls too slowly and commands take 10 to 15 seconds to complete. Game is NOT playable on Windows 8. Any word on a fix or upgrade?

Can I ask you what you did to get things working on Windows 8, as I have problems and would really appreciate some help.

I have reinstalled, and updated, and configured to Windows XP service pack 3, but no joy [&:]

I went back to Windows 7. Glad W8 only cost $40 for the digital upgrade. Will be waiting for Windows 9.

Tip for screenshots in 8
This isn’t the case with the old Print Screen > Paste into Paint procedure that has been around since Windows 3, but it is something that has been revised for Windows 8. Taking a screen grab is now fiendishly effortless – just by using a keyboard combination (Win + Print Screen or Win + Volume Down on tablets) Windows 8 takes a screenshot of the current screen and even saves it as a PNG file in the Pictures library!

A workaround has been found. Rename the unit images folder to backup unit image. The game runs fine now on Win 8. The folder is found here.
