3D Game

DW2 is being touted as a 3D game but we’re being given limited viewing angles. Can the devs enable full movement in pitch rather than set viewing angles?
Huh?

I think the reasoning is that it screws up the galaxy view as its more or less a flat 2d image that rotates instead of a volumetric effect that can be rotated around. Maybe limit full camera rotation to when you scroll in a certain distance and the galaxy view is gone.

Why not have full pitch and rotation in the system view?

I would say that in general it is not worth the time to implement it, especially if it would have potential issues for some reason, which we don't know about.

The homeworld series spoiled all of us.

With all the gameplay development that the games, it seems like the devs had to choose where there budget focus went. I'm hoping that a DW3 will just build on DW2 with the focus on a true 3d conversion.

Please stop talking about DW3 when DW2 still needs years of bug hunting and fine tuning!

Regarding the 3D view, it was locked because the landing of ships and shuttles into the spaceports was hard to realize to be good from all views..
right now there are enough bad views, so that does not really count.. I also would love to enable that but there are so many other things that are in need.. some day that will come.
if you read through the whole roadmap, I think somewhere it is said but I am not sure..
What I am sure of is, that it was mentioned somewhere as I said earlier.

But what I will never understand are people, that talk about the DLC when the game is not even out, or now, in the beta phase, talk about a third game.
There are so many games that show us, that a sequel is rarely better than its predecessor and in this case it unfoirtunately behaves the same...
The main problems were the hard to read font/size, also the spreadsheets that were not changeable and some things that needed still some love, also the talk was about a much bigger universe and such.. now if you take a look at the number of stars that are there, you have maybe 500 more than DW1..
Meanwhile the game is not as stable as the first one, the interface is not helping but hindering, it feels still not filled life but with some planets and stuff you do not need to know like showing some icons of resources you can not exactly define.
Besides the bugs, there is not that much immmersion in it than I hoped for. The mnusic was replaced or shut off the first day..
So, what makes many of you guys think the next sequel will have all of that you dram of? Because it leaves you dreaming. When the day has come it is out, 90% are disappointed, their dream pops like a balloon filled with dreams but then there is nothin in it...

So.. here is nothing to see, come back later, when the version is 1.0.79 or so..

Maybe it behaves as the X-Series (hopefully, nonetheless this way it takes years to mature..)..
Enough said.. its sad enough

I'm not sure what happened. Imo all that needed to be done was to update DWU, make DWU "prettier" (3D), and add some of the great ideas by baconmod and other mods. Instant game of the year. As it stands I'm just waiting and hoping DW2 gets better someday.

But what I will never understand are people that look for big graphical changes to games that's already being played as if its not time intensive or costly to implement. As if game development isn't a compromise being time, cost, and ROI.
Simple gameplay tweaks, small evolutions seem most viable.

Remake/remaster games are boring, it's just the same with a new skin. And DWU is the culmination of DW development from 2010 to 2014 with several expansions. DW was not great when it was originally released, DW2 is much better already.

Personally I already really enjoy DW2, and will keep playing it for a long time with hopefully future expansions coming.

I would argue DW2 is a remake/remaster with fewer features than DWU but I digress.

I can agree it is a matter of opinion here. I hope DW2 will get better and get awesome support for the future. My only worry is that sales isn't enough for long support. Number of reviews are only slightly higher for DW2 vs DWU (very lose indicator on sales). And production cost was probably much higher now with 3D graphics.

Doubt its that easy to remake all of DW-U with all its features in DW2. DW-U alone took more than 4 years to make for the Initial game + 3 expansions. Please keep in mind this is not a AAA studio with a huge work force.

The Devs have confirmed that the game will get the DLC's + expansions for the next couple of years.

"All that needed to be done" makes it sound like making a game of this size and complexity can be done overnight. I don't think people sometime appreciate the sheer man hours and dedication required to make this.

I have to really disagree with this. Ship design, tactical combat, exploration, 3D space, scale of the universe has definitely seen an improvement. As for the extra races, Pirates and end game crisis. We will eventually get those.

I would avoid making such gross generalizations or generously assuming your views are accepted by 90%. Yes, there are issues. It will be fixed in due course.

Yes, the Initial game was launched way back in March 25, 2010. Distant Worlds Universe was released 4 years and 2 months Later. We are not even 6 months into release.

My opinion: Ship design is bottlenecked without freedom, combat isn't arguably better just 3D, exploration is the same but with borrowed parts from Stellaris, 3D would be great with orbiting planets, and the scale is the same (baconmod has a 2000 star setting). Without extra races, Shakturi, etc.. I stand by my statement "DW2 is a remake/remaster with fewer features than DWU".

Edit: I apologize, I promised myself I wouldn't argue online anymore but here I am. Sigh. Signing off :)

I was referring to the "dream" everyone has about any thing or game, I did not mean DW2 in this case.
But genereally speaking about those wishes we have and dreams about what will be in a sequel. And then, when it comes out, sure 90% or even 100% are not getting what they have dreamed of. If it is done good, nice, but never ever that, what all those other personalities had in mind.
And that is good and ok.

Sorry for hijacking this, maybe it gotten out of hand..

Meanwhile I was trying to play the game, just letting it do and watch what works and so... but when right clicking away all those messages to not bother me with useless stuff, it happend that I could not unpause the game. It happened more than once when some decision or quest thin popped up that I just right clicked to close.
So it was closed, and the game was in pause mode and so I had to quit it..
Unfortunately there are many bugs that are really annoying.
And if I would not have the unpause problem, the next thing would happen to be some finding that is reported that comes over and over again. I dismiss, it comes after a short while back. Some stuff was discovered on a planet. Again and again...
Hmm...
Sorry..

And therefore, to come back to the threads intention:
When all those tiny things are taken care of, finetuning will happen, and some day also that 3D rotation that might as well just switched on right now, but...
even in the low angle mode, the badges have a bug that is described from me from the beginning on...
so.. that might as well happen when a full rotation is activated..

Everyone's got to admit. The Homeworld seriers is still the king of sci-fi space combat. Everyone else is a distant 2nd.

While the game have some bugs I would not say there are any really game breaking bugs at the moment and the game seem quite stable to me at the moment. It was a bit unstable before but now it runs pretty well.

I also don't understand complaints about the game as a whole... it is basically DWU with a MUCH better UI and graphical presentation of everything. In general a better game than DWU, I certainly are not going to play the predecessor anymore while I have this game in my hands.

DW2 is simply taking the old game into a modern gaming standard and is an excellent platform future growth in my opinion.

Are there things to complain about and wish for, sure there is... what game don't have any issues or shortcomings?!?

I'm eager to see some more development on features and balancing on the game in genera. If they add some free rotational option I would not be against it, but I would not see it as an important priority as you don't really need it to play the game. The game are essentially a 2.5D game not 3D.
