Need help with latest beta and retrofit paths

Hi!
I am having trouble getting retrofit paths to work
When I design a second escort, such as one with assault pods - all the other escorts in my fleets have a retrofit (upgrades to) paths that go to the second escort I just designed.

You either need to use different hulls (with escort role), and retrofit to latest design per role.
Or, for multiple designs in a single hull, set them to upgrade to "none" and then manually update that after creating a new version via the "Upgrade" button. It would be better if the game automatically would designate a design set to "None" instead to only retrofit to it's newer version if that "Upgrade" button is clicked.

So I need to run through one retrofit per hull for the game to lock in the path?
and just to be clear:
Hull = Merlin v3 (Escort)
Role = Escort
So in the drop down box in the ship design screen I want to pick latest for hull. Will try that today.

No...
Role is the type of ships such as Escort, Destroyer, Frigate etc...
Hull is the particular hull type of each role such as...
Role = Escort
Hull = Escort, Patrol Escort, Heavy Escort
It is just unfortunate that each first hull type allays are the same as the role name, this is what confuse allot of people.
Every ship you design is effectively a class... such as Merlin v3 (Escort).
I'm not sure why they use the term Role for what should just be "Type", the word Role is pretty misleading as that is not a thing, it is what something do. A Role is if the ship is an Escort, Raider, Carrier, Missile Carrier etc... it is the ships role in a fleet or overall doctrine.
Anyway...
You control the upgrade path of the ships in the design screen, there are several options for you to explore. So you can upgrade the ship to the latest version or the "Role", this means it will take the latest version designed of that Role. Or you can take the latest design of a specific Hull type, such as Heavy Escort. You also can design a specific ship class or design as well within that entire Role.
You can also to some degree control if a ship will upgrade or not within your fleet manager as well.
It is not really complicated once you figure it out.

Thank you for the useful information.
So I am currently working on two Frigates. One is a standard DPS Frigate that I have been using (Harpy v6) and I design a second Frigate (Gopher v1) with assault pods.
"You also can design a specific ship class or design as well within that entire Role."
Which is what I am trying to do but it isn't working. When I design the Gopher v1, save it and go back to the Harpy v6 design screen, all upgrade path options lead to the Gopher v1
Screenshot:
You guys are saying that having two Frigate designs with their own upgrade path is possible, but I can't seem to get it to work. I can make a heavy frigate design and give it its own upgrade path.
I have the same issue with mining stations. Mid-Early game I like to design two mining stations, commerce station and fighter bay - and then a second cheaper one to spam over common resources. I can manually update each station - but automating the process always results in all stations upgrading to the larger one.
Thanks!

In the design list, have you tried to prevent the AI from upgrading the stations you manually upgrade to. Under the Retrofit column you should set those stations to manual and on the design also set it to "None" or to whatever station you want it to later upgrade to... but in essence you should control those manually from then on unless you decide to upgrade to the common station.
In the design screen you can use "None" and a specific station to force it to upgrade to a specific design or not at all.
I have not even tried to do what you do as the civilian economy usually are strong enough to handle even the more expensive stations.
I'm also pretty sure the AI will always build the largest most recently designed hull, so this is a bit tricky. You probably can only downgrade to a smaller station and make it work without problem.
