Russian units not gaining guards status?

So playing through 1941 the Russian Mountain divisions in WITE 1 used to be able to be become guards.

Are they still allowed to gain guards status in WITE 2?

The reason I ask is I have mountain divisions with 10+ wins in the winter of 1941 not gaining guards status.

From what I can see in the rules they should be allowed to gain guards status so not sure if something in the system isnt working correctly or is date/time locked or something.

As well using the support unit MG battalions they dont seem to gain guard status either at any point. Not sure if that is an error or not as most support units can gain guard status.

Guess this should be here as it would be a technical issue if its not locked out for some reason.

Thought so, odd that no-one from the actual game team has stepped up to acknowledge the issue as I just started a fresh game with newest version and yep no guards for Soviet Mountain Divisions at all up to March 1942 have like 6+ divisions with more than 10 wins and only a couple losses.

also would think the MG battalions would be allowed to gain guard status if you use them.......have a bunch of them with 10+ wins and no guards status as well. Early game its a decent boost to Soviet AT firepower for 1 MG battalion and its awhile before u get brigades to start using as attachments in any number. So those 24 make decent first couple month support units.

There may be an issue here, sorry it got overlooked. I don't remember looking into this issue before, but possibly given the timing of the prior report (winter holidays/new year), and the fact that no one answered Dennis's request for replication and/or more info, it got dropped. I'm on vacation now so not sure how quickly it can get looked at. It could be a complex data/code issue, and without spending more time on it, I'm not entirely clear what the issue is (is it simply that mountain divisions should be able to become guards mountain divisions, or is there a corps angle to the issue)? Without digging into the manual, I don't recall what the rules are re mountain divisions and/or mountain corps (i.e. can you create them, or are mountain corps just a pre-set scenario thing, especially with regards guards). If Dennis has time, perhaps, he will be able to help us figure out what the issues are. If anyone can lay out the relevant rules and specific issues (ideally using games started with 1.03.11) that would really help. It's very possible the OB changes that came with the 1.03.xx series caused some unintentional changes re mountain (or other) guard units. It could also be that some things are not supposed to be possible, or even that we had to alter the rules in order to make most of the OB changes work. So possibly no easy answers here, but we should be able to give some kind of answer eventually. In the meantime, you may have to live without some guards units you were expecting.

Mountain divisions should be able to gain guard status is the issue and they are not.

As to forming Mountain corps---I think the rules do say they can form corps, but I havent gotten far enough to know if thats an issue or not.

The guards issues is huge as Guards mountain division and guards para divisions should be about the best soviet divisions due to +5 morale for troop type them +10 morale for guards status means those 2 types of divisions once guard level can almost be equal to a german infantry division in 1942 which is nice for the soviet player if you can get them to survive and gain that status.

As well with the Rovno opening an such in the south not many mountain divisions really survive in the early game for the soviet player so have the couple that do be an elite fire brigade type unit once trained up/guards status was always a priority.

Mountain corps were never buildable, not even in WitE 1. Those were scenario-specific special units, probably massively overpowered as they were not combinations of 3 mountain divs but rather 3-5 Brigades
