NKVD and other refit questions

Post by AFV »

For the Soviet player:
Should you ever refit NKVD units? (does refit even work on them?)
How many units should be on refit at one time?
For normal infantry, is there a point where you might as well disband as opposed to refit (like when units get to single digits TOE).
Is there any reason not to refit tank and mech units?

Afaik most of NKVD Units quickly disband by an algorithm unknown to us (like Rifle Corps HQs), rather early from T4/5/6/7 (or so) onwards...so, no - or try to find out which ones do not disband.

You only have limited number of Trucks. No trucks means lower CV and no MPs for MOT Units.

some do, some dont.
Note that some types of Divisions "Respawn" when being lost between certain turn periods (like up until end of November or so) - some respawn converted (so TankDiv becomes TankBrigade and MechDiv becomes RifleDiv. It's in the manual, not sure about the specifics or if it works 100% as described there.

I do not think there is a general statement possible. Theoretically you could put all on Refit but limit all TOEs to gain additional EXP without consuming trucks/manpower.
Note:
Refit gives a unit an additional chance to get 1-3 EXP for each elelent each turn.
Refit supposedly improves "blocks" of supplers you receive (something like this).

For normal infantry, I never disband depleted units but use Merge. This keeps the elements on the map.
Molotov : This we did not deserve.

Foch : This is not peace. This is a 20 year armistice.

In 1941, you will not have enough equipment to set all those units to REFIT....ever. You'll be short on AFVs, particularly Cav Tanks and T-34s. Filling out the other elements will just create a unit that is low TOE, and will rout too easily. You will have to selectively REFIT a few units.

It's not a bad idea to use MERGE on some of these; 2 understrength Mech Units can sometimes make 1 full-strength one if they already have some AFVs. You may also find yourself disbanding some for the Manpower.

In 1941, when you have Tank and Mech Divisions, truck shortages are not a problem, so that is not a limitation

Can you elaborate?

In 1941, the Soviets are mobilizing large numbers of trucks through August, at the same time the Red Army is de-motorizing (by shrinking the mobile forces, number of HQs, etc). You're falling back on supply lines and depots. I have a couple games going in 1941, and in both the pool is overflowing with trucks

I know this surplus will go away however as in September '41 losses begin to exceed Vehicle Production + Lend Lease. Vehicle production declines as the multiplier goes down, and some factories close. Winter chews up more trucks, and so does the expansion of the Red Army, namely Tank Corps, Tank Regts, Rockets, and more units.

Point being, I don't think the limitation in 1941 for Refit of Tank/Mech units is Trucks; it's AFVs. In 1942 that's going to be totally different, as the pools brim with T-34s, and trucks become scarce

Unless I am wrong?

It's hard to say because I'm not quite sure where this conversation leads.

Trucks can become scarce in 1942, but in such a case that's a self-inflicted wound. The game doesn't do that to you, you do that to you.

Broadly speaking as the game progresses through 1942, the following happens:

Motorized brigades become available, reducing trucks from the pool if built.
Tank divisions convert to brigades, adding trucks to the pool.
Mech divisions convert to rifle divisions, adding trucks to the pool.
Tank corps can be built in April, reducing trucks in the pool.
Various units, particularly artillery become motorized support units, reducing trucks from the pool.
You have two assault fronts available to create which allow for more ammo in the units, reducing trucks from the pool.
You can build mech corps in the Fall, reducing trucks from the pool.

So here is where you manage the truck fleet. You decide what to build and what not to build. Don't go crazy and you can get through 1942 with a vehicle surplus. Try and build every shiny bauble that requires vehicles, and you'll come to regret it.

M60 has more experience than I do, so I'm sure that's all correct. But from 1941, you can see the Red Army first de-motorizes (destruction/elmination of all the Tank/Mech Divisions), then re-motorizes in 1942.

All I know is that in 1941, you don't have to worry about TRUCKs in the short-term. You shouldn't waste them because you'll need them later, but in 1941 you do NOT have a truck shortage. You have an AFV (and Manpower) limitation.
