...I have been trying to get a special message to appear in a scenario, but for whatever reason I simply don't seem to be able to get the hang of it. Is there a tutorial I can get a look at or alternatively would someone be willing to walk me through it?

Check to be sure you've go the special messages popup enabled

Go to Game->Game Options->Message Log Tab-->Special Messages Row and check off both columns.
