First of all welcome to the wonderful world of ATG. :) It's nice to see you :)

Let's dig into the questions:

(1)

Classic Random Games, were the ones introduced during the time when the game was called Advanced Tactics (not Gold). It is more primitive than the other two.

A New Dawn Random Games, were introduced when AT went Gold. It is much more advanced, and has a wealth of features, that I am not sure I can do justice in a single post.

Phoenix Random Games, are the most recent iteration of random games. The name Phoenix symbolizes a rebirth. There are even more options in this one, than the other two.

(3)

Yes, you can. In fact these are included in A New Dawn and Phoenix.

(Other observations)

ATG is much more than just a collection of Random Game Generators. Thanks to a highly flexible and deep editor almost all the games features and rules are able to be modded. As such imagination is what limits what can be made, and has been made using it. I recommend checking out some of the scenarios that come bundled with the game, as well as those in the scenario bank. :)

(2).

There is an old guide here:

It is a little outdated in some of its features, but the idea is the same.

Thanks guys, that really is a big help. The only question now is,what to do in the first 10 or so turns.Someone on another forum said to buy armoured cars and explore the map,so is this game like Civilization ? or is this exploration thing for a different part of ATG ?
I am dying to get into ATG ( it soundl exactly like the game I want ) but,as I said im stuck on how to start a game.
I tried a random scenario and I got a green map with 2 stacks of units on it and that was it.I havent a clue what I was supposed to do,but anyway, thanks a lot.Now I know more than I did before.I just have to work on how to start off. :)

Yes, it is a Human only scenario. The AI can't play it (very well). It is kind of a showcase for what can be done with the editor. I decided to make a global ww2 scenario, and the more I worked on it, the less the AI was able to understand it. It is deeply intricate, because the world war was. I recommend 3 humans play it at least, but up to 8 people can play. We have out own little Slack group for playing it.

There is an old version of the scenario World at War (WaW) that had a pretty decent AI player for a solo all of WW2 game. I'd have to dig it out of my archives because I don't think it's in the scenario bank anymore?

ATG is in my opinion, the best game out there for a blend of strategy and tactics, at least for WW2 era. Turn based, hex based, no fancy graphics, but great gameplay, especially for multiplayer.
Its' documentation and tutorials are very bad, but after learning some of the basics (like movement) it's not so hard at all.

Yes, it has elements of Civ in it but it is not basically an exploration game. That said you can create random games that have lots of exploration and building in them. Or stick to historical scenarios.
Here's a link to 1 youtube tutorial that may help you.

It´s a while since I played, but I recall 2 typical opening strategies: The AI likes to make units of single trucks (cheap and fast) and grab as much territory as possible. I used a variety of this with armoured cars, since they can chase trucks away. Now this is for the single city start variant.

But you can also play a variant where all the map is already distributed between the players. In this case you have a lot to do in your first few turns: Make TOEs of all unit types you want, start production in all cities -don´t forget about supply and Political Points!- and move the few units you start with to the border as a screen. Hope that helps a little.
