Winter War v2.0 For TLD

Post by Tejszd »

A CC mod Winter War was created for CC5 which concentrated on the Southern front, NW of Leningrad, where the heaviest troop concentrations were.

This mod is still available on the Close Combat Series website; http://www.closecombatseries.net/CCS/index.php in the Downloads / Close Combat 5 Mods.

Winter War v2.0 For TLD

Post by Tejszd »

Image

BACKGROUND:

The original Winter War mod was made for CC4 by Luer and moloch in 2001.
Then the mod was converted and substantially updated for CC5 by Kartboy6, PzEddiea and the rest of the mod team. Their final version was v1.3 released in 2004.

Since I have always liked the mod I have converted/moved it to TLD

CHANGES IN V2.0 for TLD Nov. 30/2020:
1) Ported mod data/graphics from CC5 to TLD adding the following TLD features;
- added historical weather
- added night battles based on how cold/warm the weather was. They mainly occur early and late in the GC.
- adjusted air, artillery and mortar support based on level (Recruit = most, Elite = least )
- enabled BG retreat feature
- enabled surprise so the Axis/Finish player can not move the 1st turn
- fixed ammo count (AlsTeams, AxsTeams & Soldiers)
- fixed best kill and best mount (Vehicles)
- fixed single battle start random crash, it was due to random wreck selection and not every vehicle had wrecks (Vehicles)
- fixed map coding as building walls were not solid *** still a few maps to go but wanted it released today ***
- Recreated Battles/Operations/Campaigns in TLD editor
2) Changed Finish Artillery/Naval support from 0 quantity and made it available for select maps due to Finish coastal batteries
3) Changed Russian Artillery/Naval support to be available on all maps
4) Changed soldier graphic file to get smaller soldiers (closer to the map and vehicle scale)
5) Changed (US) circled star to only a star for Russian BG info icon
6) Change Naval Support icon to Artillery
7) Created a Winter War icon file
8) Changed Heavy Snow so it can be crushed to Light Snow
9) Recreated all the map OVM and MMM (zoomed out) files with trees

Good Evening,

This is the link for the patch v 2.1 of this mod:

EDIT: link obsolete. Please go the the link of the most recent TLD Winter War patch that you can find in a more recent comment inside this post.

- 80% of tanks, wrecks and shadows have been reworked.
- Added four new tanks graphic (both hull and turrests; they are not new teams or vehicles in Data: just the graphic) and two new turrets graphic made by me for tanks/vehicles.
- Added some tanks and wrecks, some reworked by me few not reworked, from Der Kessel mod (about tanks: four reworked by me and two not reworked).
- Reworked three Winter War mod tanks.
- All Wrecks have been reworked or changed.
The main objective of this part of the work it was to have a more adequate and uniform graphics, as well as a more winter graphic among the various vehicles and tanks. It's the bigger part of the work about this patch.
- Fixed all the tanks and vehicles shadows (except for the T-20 vehicle: in my opinion, for this very small vehicle is better no shadow than a huge shadow, so I have removed it, for this vehicle).
- Added the missing airplane shadow.
- Corrected ammo counts in teams.
- Corrected some minor errors in Data (here and there: weapons range, number of vehicle crew, grenade settings etc.)
- Corrected a typo in an Operation name.
- T-35 tank has been removed because this tank it was not present during the Winter War, adding few other tanks in that battlegroup instead of it.
- Added a soldier in two of the russian command team (now two men it's the minimum)
- Game.gdg game interface reworked like in Kharkov mod, in order to fit to 8-10 men teams.
- Reworked the graphic files of 5 maps in order to delete signature on the maps (for realism).
- Added T-28 command tank.
- Fixed the number of KV-1 protoype tanks: now they are two (historically correct)
- Corrected the value about the maximum distance from starting map a BG can look for a supply depot to reform on: 4 it's too few (at least half of the Finnish Battlegroups will be lost when disband, with the old value).
- Russian 20th tank brigade has been a bit reworked.
- BT-7M corrected in BT-7, because BT-7M it became available only after the Winter War.
- All team names reworked for both sides.
- Reworked and/or fixed the entry victory locations for both sides: three for the Soviets (the fixed ones), and 2 for the Finnish (the added ones).

Please test it: if it's all ok, I think it could become an official patch.

Drizzt

N.B.
I have planned to add battles, operations and campaigns, to complete the mod. It's the only work remaining to do.

Good evening,

Here the link to the patch v 2.2 of this mod:

EDIT: link obsolete. Please go the the link of the most recent TLD Winter War patch that you can find in a more recent comment inside this post.

These are the updates for v2.2 of the Winter War TLD mod patch (of course it includes all the changes/corrections of the patch v 2.1) :

- Added 41 battles, 5 operations and 2 campaigns
- All org battles/Operations/Campaign have been reworked, except the Grand Campaign (but it has been renamed)
- Two org operations, deeply reworked by me, have been promoted to Campaign.
- Six Soviet Battlegroups icons for the Scenario Editor have been corrected about minor glitches
- Corrected a minor graphic problem in the Scenario Editor screen (the old CC5 writes that are covered by BGs icons in TLD)
- Corrected many villages/town names with peculiar Finnish letters, inside the BTD files, that the game Engine can’t read correctly in the briefing of maps during Campaigns and Operations.
- Corrected many minor errors in the BTD files.
- Added 11 Finnish commander photos.
- Added 26 Soviet commander photos, changing also the only one present.
- Added three black/anonymous photos that are different between Finnish and Soviets (two for the Finnish, one for the Soviets, related to the only three not found)
- Three commander names corrected (I mean changed; plus two others corrected only about typos, plus the sky battalion commanders updated).
- Two Battlegroups names updated (the ski Battalions Battlegroups: they belonged to the 86th Motorized).
- Added the historical military flag insigna in any Finnish battlegroup that was without a battlegroup insigna in battlegroup screen.
- dll file reworked (last version: v.5.50.34) in order to have artillery support option, instead of naval support option, in both scenario editor screen and in battle. Moroever, all the interface screens that contained "Axis"-"Allies" (or "Allied") have been updated with "Finns" (or "Finnish") and "Soviets" (or "Soviet") : this is particulary significant in the messages about request of truce/withdraw truce request, and in the various Debrief Screens.

Thanks for your update,

Were you the one porting this mod to LSA?
IIRC there was an expanded stratmap with new maps from Southernland for the LSA version.

Hi,

No, I completely ignored the existence of a project like this, until your comment.

I just finished this mod (it's how I think mod are finished, just my personal view: I pay a bit more attention for the single player; and I have corrected some small things here and there; the tanks/vehicles work it was necessary, in my opinion, for this mod).
I have also found the exact amount/type of all tanks/vehicles inside the Soviet tank Brigades, but without exact info about all the rest (I have just the number of guns, but only the total), it's useless and negative to modify only them.

Moreover, I have never modded LSA. I should learn forcepools LSA mechanics first of all. Not something that worries me, just something that is not in my programs, considering also that TLD can arrive to 64 maps too.

My current objective is to finish the TLD Kursk mod one day. Also kharkov mod needs many updates, but Kursk is the only mod I will work in the next months.

Drizzt

P.S.
I would like to see Ortona, the Battle of the Scheldt, Karelia II and few others for TLD or LSA, one day.

Hi,

Link now it works (or at least for me for sure, so the link works). I had already restored it few hours ago. When it happens, 99% of times it's for my choice (arranging my files). In that case, it's a matter of an hour (usually even less), not more, and I update the post with a new link.

Maybe it's better a new thread, anyway. If several comments will be added to this post, the patch will be "hidden" inside this post.

Let me know if you can't dowload it now.

That's all about this patch. Now I will correct only any bugs, if they are found and reported.

Hi Drizzt,

I've installed V2.2 but i see some wrong rank graphics for soviet teams, the soviet BG in the first battle has british para rank icons for sniper and recon team, finnish ranks for the 122mm gun and american rank icons for the T-26 crew (only ingame, gamegadg file).

Maybe it's because i have installed it in WAR instead of TLD, i don't have TLD installed now?

Hi,

I don't have modded that part of the mod (for example: I have worked with tanks, but I have literally not touched snipers), but I have found in this moment that is an error present also in v 2.0 version (the basic version) of the mod. Can you confirm it?

I have installed the v 2.0 in a different folder, so I can check both them (2.2 and 2.0). Snipers (also Finnish) and (really) few more units have this problem. Please check the org 2.0 version and let me know if with a clean/alone installation of v 2.0 this error is present or not (just use Soviet 80th rifle and 2nd Finnish Brigade/1st Div in a created by user battle). Thanks. I need to be sure about this thing, first of all (I mean thanks to other users like you), then I will check these errors.

P.S.
EDIT: Nevermind about my P.S. (if read), it was my trick to force to install the mod out of the main folder (I have used a CCE. exe as "bait") : I had forgotten it. It was normal to rework the .exe file in CC5 (like I have done in past), but of course it's useless in TLD.

Re: Winter War v2.0 for TLD - Released!

After a quick check, it's a problem of "style" conversion between CC5 and TLD, present also in 2.0 version. For reasons that I will not explain now, values after 3 are not accepted in TLD, for this parameter. It's quick to correct. Many (maybe almost all) recon units and all the snipers, Soviet Border Guards, some gun and mortar units (many, about soviets) are affected by this bug, both Soviets and Finnish.
Moreover, there is also the case about few units that are correct in Battlegruop screen (about their military patches), but not correct in battle, so it's a game.gdg problem, probebly about a missing/wrong graphic file, in this specific case: I will check it. I will correct all, in the following days.

It would be good to read in uniform file what are the various choices (instead of the basic info like "US Green Iinfatry"). I can deduct them from other files, but some of them are very immediate to check (like jaeger and standard uniforms), some other needs an historical check about patches to understand org modder choice. Uniform ranks and soldier uniform colors are linked in ways that I don't explain now, and they are coded in a different way, compared to CC5. Anyway, I will update also this info.

Thanks for checking into this.

If you're making an update, you might want to check out the finnish 81mm mortar, it has the same sound as the 45mm AT gun now.

Re: Winter War v2.0 for TLD - Released!

Hi,

Sure: I will check it, thanks.

UPDATE: I confirm that the second problem are missing graphic files (they are present, but they are the old org ones) in game.gdg. And after a short research I discovered errors in the military ranks: for example, the cavalry used the yellow one (they are all mixed), not the military patch assigned now.
I will add the Navy ranks for the Soviets and for the Finns. If, in the pre -1940 era, 4 slots (the limit) are more than enough for the Russians, this is not the case for the Finns: in theory I could use another nationality in a "fake way" to cover them all (including engineers they are 6 slots, while the current ones are 5, but I have only 4 slots): it means more work for very few units, including doubling audio files etc. So no, I will not do it. So, I have chosen between navy and armored units ranks about Finns. I have chosen the navy ranks for the Finns, because they do not had real tank big units in this war; And considering that the military patches are almost identical (both with black background), I will also use it for the very few tank units, because I need to combine the uniform color that is very similar too. So, for the Finns, there will be: Jaeger (that is now in use to the infantry), cavalry (that is now in use to the Jaeger) and infantry (that is now in use to the Navy). The alternative is the renounce to the peculiar military patches of cavalry or Jager, to add armored units military patches: not a smart idea, in my opinion.
UPDATE 2
I have learned that only general staff, naval school and coastal artillery personnel had collar military ranks in FInnish Navy (like for the soviets). If for the soviets this is not a problem (I have added the sleeve patches in a free slot), for Finns it means a conflict between sleeve and collar patches, about armored units and naval units. It's higly probable that the coastal troops were mainly coastal artillery units, and, in this case, their uniforms were more similar to the ones of infantry, so I have decided to create the armored units military ranks, instead of the navy ones (the coastal units will use the infantry patches, like now). I will made the ones before 1940, in use for the separate tank brigades (black and light grey about colors; after 1940 they are black and orange, used for armored units more significant/big than the ones before 1940).
