I am playtesting a scenario, and I have begun disbanding a unit by setting the reinforcements to disband. It is now completely empty, that is no troop types in it. How do i "erase"/"remove" the unit from play, what I would normally call disbanding.

Ah, solved! It seems that if you wait one more turn, then they disband automatically.
